Go with diesel or gas?

Looking at a diesel car - Golf TDI, for the first time.

Is diesel the future? Do you see it becoming more expensive than gas? Or vise versa? Which do we have more of under ground?

In other words, out of gas a diesel, which one should be more expensive in a couple of years.

Thanks!

I would guess the gas engine would be more expensive to maintain over the years. The diesel engine has fewer moving parts, has less things that can go wrong with it. They can be hard to start in extreme cold, sometimes they need an engine heater to be plugged in over night.

The price of fuel should move in tandem with gas, more or less, they both are made from petroleum.

Probably the biggest downsides for diesel is in finding fuel for it, and possibly hard starting in extreme cold.

If the price is right, and you are ok with the acceleration, I would get the diesel.

I'm pondering the same thing. I've owned a couple of diesel cars. Peugeot and MB, both were beaters. Working on trucks and cranes permitted diesel owners to fill-up from the equipment when we could, hee. hee.

The new V W diesel that came out in 98' got rave reviews in the European automotive press. They have been making improvements on it yearly.
The guys on this board have harsh words to offer about V W quality control, fit, finish, interiors not holding up.

Diesels DEMAND clean air and fuel. Some are a real bitch to prime if they run out of fuel.
They require a bigger battery. Cold starts in sub zero weather are generally easier with gasoline. But 50MPG, more stable fuel costs, and having something different are pluses for me. I'm an old fart and my racing days are long over.

Some people live on farms and run the Red fuel meant for off road use, but thats ill eagel....

Industry is crippled when fuel oil costs go up. To support the cost of fuel oil they just raise the price of gasoline, all the little people get to pay..Thats the way it works.....
Or so it would seem...

Thank you for the great feedback!

Hydrogen is the way to go. But not until 2010 I guess... heh heh.

Saw a really cool demonstration at Epcot Center at the end of the Test Drive ride. Have a GM guy with a prototype of their new Hydrogen based car under research. No more cables and such, all digital and computer controlled. Looked really cool but it's all way too new to be relied on yet....
