New Year's Resolutions are always a great time to set out some exciting goals for the year. So, what are YOUR goals for 2009? What's going to change for you this year? What awesome goals are you going to achieve?

MOD: Hijacked for the Goals 2009 thread

Please update this thread as this will be pinned. Also compare how well you did in 2008.

Update:

This thread has been stickied, so I reformatted the post. I didn't do anything health-related before 2008, so I have nothing to compare myself to yet. But for some personal history: In April of 2008, I completed a 6-week test to improve my overall energy. I really enjoyed it, but I had a big struggle getting back into it. I did, however, manage to maintain the weight I lost, which I am pleased with. So my goals for 2009, in order:

1. Lose 30 pounds (from 200lbs to 170lbs)
2. Begin "Starting Strength" and build a home gym setup
3. Purchase a Nordictrack Reflex-series Treadmill for indoor running (weather is often bad here)
4. Complete a Century bike ride (100 miles)

My tentative goal is to get to 170 pounds by April 1st. This may come sooner or may come later, but that's the goal I'll work towards - 3 months, approximately 10 pounds a month through proper eating (6 healthy meals a day) and exercise (45 minutes of cardio, 6 days a week). I would also like to increase my physical strength and appearance, so I will begin Starting Strength training after I lose the weight. I've never lifted weights before, so I figure the basics will be good to learn first. I am also studying Scooby's workout methods and have been putting together a bodybuilding workout plan based on his results and advice:

http://www.scoobysworkshop.com/

Bodybuilding has become of interest to me because I discovered I really enjoy seeing the results that come from a healthy lifestyle, in addition to feeling the results. I've never gotten buff before so it will be fun! I am also interested in the Ironman triathlon competition, which is why I plan on picking up a treadmill (the Reflex series has a bouncy, cushioned tread which is supposed to be better on the knees) and attempting a Century ride. I completed a 20-mile ride this year and I think I'll be able to handle a 100-mile ride next year. I don't know if I'll ever be able to compete in an Ironman race due to a trick knee and kidney problems, but it will sure be fun to get in shape for one! So those are my 2009 goals - get to my desired weight, start lifting weights, purchase a treadmill so I can run on bad-weather days, and complete a 100-mile bike ride

I've already posted my new goals in the "Goals for 2008" thread that I figured would be converted for 2009.

10 pounds a month is an inadvisable rate, don't you think? While maintaining lean body mass, it is advised to lose 1-1.5 pounds a week. That would slow your progress down, but you would lose much less muscle. I understand the optimism, but I don't quite understand the highly accelerated goal of 10 pounds a month.

Previously I did a 6-week stint with 6 meals a day, 15 minutes on the exercise bike, and an early bedtime. I lost 23 pounds in 6 weeks, which is approximately 3.8 pounds a week or 15 pounds a month on average. So I think 10 pounds is realistic - it's not necessarily a specific, chosen goal, it's just the results I've seen previously. I ate better and exercised and lost weight. I didn't choose to lose 1-1.5 pounds a week, I just ate healthy and did a little bit of exercise in the morning and the pounds feel right off!

Right, but you're running the risk of losing nearly equivalent amounts of fat and muscle. That means that when you hit 170, if you don't incorporate some heavy lifting (which you're obvious going to), you will become the skinny fat guy. You just gotta keep everything in check. Your calorie deficit may be greater than what is deemed good or healthy.

My goals are:

1. Lose 3% BF (down to 8% from 11 or so)
2. Compete in at least 4 triathlons
3. Complete my first marathon
4. Gain the fitness I need to complete an ironman.

Should be a fun year.

Goals:

1. Learn or improve the following moves: muscle-up, free-standing HSPU, clean, snatch, L-seat pullups.
2. 2x BW deadlift, 1x BW overhead press, 1.5x BW bench press, 1.8x BW back squat, 1.5x BW front squat.
3. 8 miles @ 8 min / mile. I probably won't really start on this one until the summer. I'm thinking about taking a POSE course because I have foot issues and find running great distances painful.

I'm currently debating really hard on what to do about a gym...I've gone to Lifetime Fitness since I moved here 7 (wow, 7?) months ago - I've put on 15 pounds, most of it muscle. I don't think I'd like to get much bigger, but I'm definitely not as lean as I'd like. I look good, but I'm picky about everyone else, I might as well do the same for myself. SO, I'm debating between CF ($$$ and far away), a boxing gym (close, but looks really...big-box, so to speak in retail terms) and staying at the Lifetime and hopefully being able to stick to a cardio program.

I think that my biggest thing will be to start hiking more around here and get back into rock climbing. Add a little variety back into the mix.

Hmm, my short term goal is a deadlift of 495. I just did 465 yesterday. I'd also like to put on 5-10 more lbs of bodyweight, up from 245. At the end of the year I should be in ROTC and will be running again too.

Trim some fat so you can actually see all my abs (I know they're there).

Do 100 consecutive pushups (shouldn't take THAT long?)

From the 2008 goals thread:

Lol, KoolDrew, crt, and brikis are nuts. I'll give you some more normal numbers TecHNooB Oh, and stats: 19/m/152/5'8"

Goals:
Weigh 155 at ~10% body fat (currently ~152 with probably 12-13% BF from bulking)
Squat 300 (1 rep max)
Military Press 150 (1RM)
Bench 250 (1RM)
Be able to run a 400m in under 50 seconds (sprinters FTW)
Survive the Navy Seal Crossfit workout :Q

New goals for 2009:

Stay injury free, even if it means taking things slower than I'd like.
Get into the aesthetic shape I was in when I finished bulking.
Squat 350+ pounds.
Deadlift 400+ pounds.
Be able to run a 400m under 50 seconds.
And for shiggles: one arm pullups.

I know I can get all of these goals if I can stay consistent. In 10 weeks I met all of my previous goals. I know I can push my body to reach these new goals, but I need to be more aware of potential degeneration of joints, muscles, etc. No injuries this year. Only success.

Surf more, I didn't get in the water nearly as much as I could have this year. Gas prices had an effect, so hopefully the prices will stay reasonable through '09

The most in-shape people I knew growing up in Florida were my surfer buddies. Always wish I had learned!

Well, I've got two big marathons to run, the PF Changs AZ and IMS Arizona Marathon. After that, it usually gets too hot for any big long distance runs until the fall.

I'd like to run an ultramarathon, but most of ones near me are . . . not for beginners. Zane Gray would be sweet to run, but its among the most difficult of Ultras.
