call to see about switching over my programing to HD and get HD setup here (box's etc).

the lady i called was worthless. I could not understand her at all.

so i have to call a local place and buy HD receivers and have them come out hook them up and change the dish etc (costing me more money).

guess i see what direct TV has to offer heh.

Agreed. I had to cancel Dish where I used to live beause some trees grew and blocked the signal. So now that I have moved I wanted to get Dish back. They want to charge me MORE than a new customer to get hooked back up. A lot more.

Eff that. I'm getting DirecTV hooked up next week. NFL Ticket FTW.

Call them up and tell them you are going to cancel and switch to DirecTv for the HD package. See what they say.
Then tell me.

Careful. Dish doesn't have a strong retention policy. I've experienced it first hand. If you want to call and cancel, they'll do it, no questions asked.

"Yes I need to cancel my service"

"Thank you sir for using Dish, your account has been cancelled effective today"

Interesting. I did that a year and a half ago and they sent me a HD receiver, no questions asked. I only had the 500 dish or whatever, so I don't get everything I could get in HD (mainly CBS is missing) but I've been too lazy to upgrade to the HD dish that would get me the rest of them.

TWC and Direct are pretty aggressive at customer retention....Dish, not so much.

Plus, Direct will have 100 HD channels by the end of the year. I might switch from TWC pretty soon, if I can get a clear signal.

My experience was I was offered a new receiver, remote and new dish for $49.

But my problem with that is why should we have to do that in the first place....This is no isolated incident with a service like this. NO ONE seems to want to keep their current loyal customers, mobile phone service is the same...after each contract is up i switch to another carrier because i will always get a much better deal than if i had tried to stay with my current provider.

I actually tried the same thing as the OP a few months ago and it was ridiculous what they wanted to change me over to HD. I can get DTV with an HD for free if i were to switch over.

Veriozon tried to puillc rap with me not to long ago. my contract was up in like 3 months. well the sen tme a flyer for a new one. 1400 minutes and a new phone. Well it was the same price as i was paying for 900 minutes. so i called and figured i woudl get that.

they said i would have to get a new 2 year agreement. wich i said was fine. but we couldnt get a enw phone. i hated the phone we had so really wanted a new one. the lady refused to give me the new phone.

so i told her to cancel the new contract i would be going with T-mobil. she said ok and we hung up. 5 minutes later ti was verizon calling saying i could get the new phones if i got the service heh.

its bullshit that we have to threaten to cancel or actually cancel to get them. pissem me off.

If i have to switch to direct TV no problem. i read a few articles where they will be getting more HD channels then dish network.

Nope.
In Alaska you use a 39" or 48" dish. I had a 48" dish. Too big for something like that. Plus I didn't care enough to bother.

I'm somewhat happy with DirectTv...bad weather turns it to crap, and occassional random resets are needed, but for the most part I enjoy it.

I talked with a local dealer about a month ago and he said (after I mentioned the DTV sat launch) that Dish Network would be using the same satellite, thus getting the same HD upgrades. This I thought was odd, but I've seen it confirmed elsewhere since.

T-Mobile for the best customer service.

I called them:
"I would like to cancel my service"
"Im sorry to hear that, but what can we do you keep you as a customer? a new phone deal? a better calling plan?"
