In Nevada the DMV was always hell and id have to get up at 6:30 am just to get there 30 minutes before opening so I could be out in a resonable time.

In colorado however they split drivers licenses and registration, oddly enough registration was the most painfree and pleasant experience ive ever dealt with.

Drivers License was a total pain in the ass, but I was told this was due to me getting one in August right when school gets back in, and typically its pretty fast, except when a percentage of 28000 new CU students are getting brand new licenses to try for in state tution.

The California DMV should be classified as a terrorist organization.

While I don't care to deal with the DMV, I never have problems getting in. I call the 800 # to make appointments a few days in advance, when I get there, I usually have to wait only a few minutes. On the rare occasion I don't have time to make an appointment, I simply show up 1/2 hour before they open and wait in line. (usually quite a line by then) It's rare that it takes an hour once they open for business.
Yes, I live in a relatively small town (Modesto, pop. ~200K, county ~ 500K) and there are only 2 other DMV's in the county, but all of them have relatively decent service unless you hit during their busy times...then, you may wait a couple of hours.

Well see there you go. Any DMV I have ever gone to in Los Angeles County has been crazy but it's just a fact of life we have to live with over here. Oh yea the service sucks cus when you get stupid people all day it gets you mad.

Usually when I go to the DMV there is a butt load of people in line, so I just stand in line, relax take out my smartphone lurk AT for a while until it's my turn, and we all know how short 35 minutes can be on AT right?

Actually, if you get to DMV before 10am or so, it's not so bad. If you wait beyond that, you get all the seniles and stoneys.

why you have to make an appointment at the DMV?

it's not so bad in TX, the line moves fairly quickly and the worst thing that happens is one of the 3 people at the service desk pass you on to another person because they're going on break.

Holy crap, thats a small town to you? :Q My towns like 4k if that. It makes a trip to the DMV pretty nice, it gets a little busy later in the day but go in the morning and there's maybe a few people in line.

You did see the "RELATIVELY"...used as comparison to those folks who are dealing with LA/Orange County population counts.

Sure, there are lots of smaller towns in the country...I've lived in several of them over the years...exciting places like;
Clayton, Idaho..pop.43
Steptoe, Wash. pop. unknown ~100 or so
Big Piney, Wyoming pop. 408
Marbleton Wyoming pop. 720

So yes, by comparison to those, Modesto is a HUGE CITY...but not when comparing to th major metropolitan areas in the country...

up in the Boston area the DMV (called RMV) isnt bad at all. I mean, the hours kind of suck, but all of the locations have websites with estimated wait times updated in real time. So you can just go when the wait is the shortest. And after getting my registration once, I just renewed online, i even updated my address after moving online too. All in all, not that bad.

I went to the DMV in Orange county without a appointment and was pleasantly surprised how quick it was to get a license and register your car in the state. Took about 30 minutes to do each.

Have you seen the family guy episode with the reference to the DMV? It is so true where I live. It's kind of the same for the Passport Agency. Expect to spend a whole day at either place if you live in a major city.
