First four Metallica albums (Kill Em All, Ride the Lighting, Master of Puppets, ...And Justice for All) were amazing thrash. The black album was a very mediocre album, but certainly not what they were good at, which was thrash.
Everything they've released and done since has sucked, IMO.

It wasn't a "self titled debut" as they had been out for a very long time before that.
Sorry, I got confused. But my point remains that the Black album is the shit.
Black can't hold a candle to the three before it. I'll take AJFA (nevermind the f'd mixing) any day.
absomuthafuckinlutely!
Well, Pabs original point still stands. They peaked at Black and its been downhill ever since.
I remember the bassist saying in an interview around the time of S&M, "Yeah, we sold out. Sold out stadiums!"

I don't care. You make music, I listen to music, end of transaction. I don't care what you do outside of that.

It's probably pretty much all Ulrich. The guy just oozes bitch/asshole/jackass/NapoleonComplex constantly. It's really too bad that they became a bunch of dicks, I loved everything up to and including AJFA and liked everything then on, except for St. Anger. I think they reached the height of moronic-ness with SA and are now a bunch of idiots. The detuned mics, stupid thrashing, horrible snare-less drum...etc, ruined the whole album. They've wasted the last 10 years being idiots and I don't think it'll change. I'll try to listen to the new one when it comes out, but I am probably not going to buy it.

edit: and the live version of Seek and Destroy on the B side totally blows away the studio version...

While their last great album was Justice, they do have a few tracks here and there since that are alright so I won't say everything they've released since has sucked. Having said that, the above is not too far off.Originally posted by: Wheezer

Actually I think pissing off the pocket protector crowd and Internet shut ins is cool. Now they just need to come out with a good album.Originally posted by: Agentbolt
Wah wah wah
In their quest to become the single most hated band of the 21st century, Metallica invited some bloggers/reviewers to their studio to listen to 6 or so tracks. No NDA was signed or anything like that.
So the bloggers wrote up some reviews (which apparently weren't exactly glowing) and Metallica promptly demanded all the mean articles get taken down, or there'd be legal action taken. I mean, how can a group of grown men be such whiny babies? Every time they're in the news over the past 6 years it's been to bitch and moan about some inane, perceived problem they have with their fans, critics, whoever. This would be embarrassing behavior for Enya, never mind a supposed "hard rock band".
Since they have a few thousand hardcore "Metallica can do no wrong!!" fans I'm sure at least one person will chime in to defend them, but seriously, I hope the majority of people who hear about this find it as pathetic as I do.

Well this is pretty typical of how Metallica has conducted itself since the black album.
James promises this CD will be a return to the old style.. much like he said with St. Anger and we know how that turned out.
I was a bit hopeful since James said he brought back his Boogie IIC+ amps which were used on the MOP and AJFA albums heavily (amongst other things) and used extensively on tour. However, issuing a gagging order on an album listening party (essentially making said album listening useless) is about the most unmetal thing I can think of.
Metallica hit their peak with And Justice for All in my opinion and nothing after that really grabbed me. A lot of Metallica died with Cliff unfortunately despite their record post death being fantastic. I try to separate art and music as much as possible so I try not to pay attention to this kind of shit but at the same time it gives you a pretty solid window into their motivation and that alone kind of ruins it for me. Metallica simply hasn't evolved with the times like other bands as old as they are have and I think it's showing here.

Hating Metallica is like hating Microsoft, Apple or Green Peace; it's popular so people jump on the band waggon.
