February 29, 2008 - Retail copies of God of War: Chains of Olympus on the PSP popped up in the office this morning and brought with them the promise of blood on the PlayStation 3.

God of War III is coming soon.

Just like the Chains of Olympus ad that was on the back of the God of War II instruction manual, the back of the Chains booklet shows the traditional Omega symbol with PS3 written inside of it. The three is quite large, and below it, the ad says "Coming Soon" and "PlayStation 3."

Now, we did some research, and it turns out the Webster's New World College Dictionary Fourth Edition defines "soon" as "in a short time (after a time specified or understood); shortly; before long."

Does that mean 2008? We'll have to wait and see.

Hope they cram all the goodness into 50GBs! Probably in 2009 though.

I don't think there is any ps3 game on the market right now that even breaks 25gigs.

Stranglehold on the ps3 I believe uses the 50gb discs but that maybe because they threw in hard boiled.

MGS4 might break the 25gb mark, how much of it in excess of actual game data + high definition audio I dunno but hopefully they did just shove tons of movies just to claim they need the 50gbs.

Kojima has stated numerous times that they ran out of room at 25GB so they decided to use 50GB. You can easily find his quotes on Google.

If it's 2008, it's winter 2008, possibly Q1 or early Q2 2009. But if Chains of Olympus and GOW3 were developed at the same time.. maybe. But since they had still were developing GOW2 when the PS3 came out, and that game didn't release until Spring of 2007, roughly half a year into the PS3's life.. it's safe to assume they aren't that far into development. Now, they likely have Sony holding their hand in development, so they probably aren't having a super tough time with development... I doubt we'll see it this year. Killzone 2 is releasing this year, and that game has been in the works for a long time. Resistance 2 is also coming out this year, a year after Insomniac's last title... however that company figured out the PS3 early and development is a walk in the park for them it seems. They are a very talented team that can crank out quality titles year after year. There was a good time between GOW and GOW2, suggesting slower development and much likely a smaller team, which I believe they have stated they are a smallish developer.

The AAA release schedule is filling up quickly for this year. I don't think we're going to see until 2009.

I guess so. Joystiq has article up today that US/euro version using 50gb discs won't even have japanese voice overs and vice versa

I dunno why but I happen to think that there's must be tons of useless filler or duplicated files.

Why is it so hard to believe?

MGS doesn't use FMV's, BTW.

I'm thinking one or more of a few possibilities:

1) Duplicated files to avoid a mandatory installation / allow faster reads.
2) Lots of uncompressed audio or high quality audio
3) FMV perhaps. Since nobody's played MGS4 all the way through, I'd have to read a dev. comment to believe, for sure, there is no FMV on the disc.
4) Not compressing anything for whatever reason.
5) Paid to be a bullet point by Sony for pushing Blu-Ray benefits

Seeing how nearly every other freakin' game in existence has yet to even come close to truly using 50GB, I have my reservations believing MGS4 is going to be the second coming of Christ and somehow actually legitimately use 50GB of disc space.

Because 50 GB is a shit-ton of disc space for models and textures and audio.

other than FFXIII and FFXIII Versus, this has to be my most wanted PS3 game at this point.

I'm probably in the minority on this, but I think duplicating data and 50 GB blu-ray discs is worth the premium of the PS3 because it means 2x disc spinning and super quiet operation. Assuming that's one reason MGS4 is 50 gigs. I hate noise.

I'm getting the feeling that audio is the chief reason. They're not even gonna offer dual-language support because it takes up too much space. And they've been talking about 7.1 since pretty much day one.

I didn't think a quiet drive was important (in my PS3) until I got a 360. Jesus that thing is loud.
