God, this is fun (running UT2004 at full settings)

Well, I've finally been able to pump the settings up all the way on UT2004. Couldn't do it on my old system, so I hunkered down, spent some money, and put together an affordable UT2004 beast. Framerate never dips below 50 on high-player Onslaught maps, 75 on deathmatch, with full settings. No overclocking, stable as a rock. God I love building something cool.

For those wondering, here are the stats:

Athlon 64 3200+
ASUS K8V SE Deluxe
Radeon Pro 9800
1 GB PC3200 RAM
2 HD RAID (10,000 RPM 74 GB WD's -- my only true splurge)
Plextor 8x DVD+-R/RW
20" Dell 2001FP (got it with the great 25% off coupon someone was posting)
Logitech Z-2200 speakers
Standard MS optical mouse, natural keyboard

Total cost: $1728.

UT2K4 isn't that system intensive. My rig plays it alright too, but I guess yours will be quite a bit faster

Congrats!

What res do you play at? I know 16x12 is default for that lcd.. wondering cuz I frequently dip below 40 fps on the comp in my sig at 12x10 in onslaught games (I only play the 32-man servers) and I don't even max out my settings...

Now get an X800Pro

Thought about it, but the price premium wasn't worth it, in my mind. I instead put the money into the dual 10,000 RPM RAID, and let me tell you, it was worth it. The benchmarks I get on this setup blow everything else I've ever had. UT2004 levels, even with precaching on, load in seconds.

How you like your new Dell screen? I know you were unhappy with the 172X. Is 2001FP working out better for you?

I've got a pretty nice rig but even with (old) dual 37GB Raptors in RAID the level loads take forever. Looking forward to getting a pair of newer SATA drives.

Really? On my rig it took about 15 seconds before patch, under 10 seconds after. Then again, it is two SATA 10,000 RPMs screaming, so it better be fast.

That's pretty good, my MAX fps in unreal 2k4 would be 75fps, I average about 55 though during ONS Torlan, so that's a pretty sweet rig you got there

I have pretty much the exact same system and yet in unreal, my framerates are no where near like this guys. Sometimes it goes below 30 fps on larger maps and it can even go to 30 on some smaller maps. I have known from the start that theres something bogging my comp down, as I get pretty "low" benchmarks 3dmark 01 and 03 compared to scores that I have seen. I'm new to the computer tech stuff so I'm not entirely knowledgable on how to tweak and stuff, but does anyone have an idea as to what might be bogging the system down?

Those framerates don't mean much to me. Play a 32-man onslaught game and see what your minimum framerates are. I couldn't care less about fps over 60 personally it's when the frames drop under 40 that I start to notice.

My experience is like atomsmashers, I run at 12x10, no aa/af, with medium/high settings and in those big onslaught games when I'm zoomed in or there's a lot of particle effects on screen the framerate will drop below 40 fps.

My comp is running fine, all the right drivers are installed, all my benchmarks are dead on. I think I just have higher standards for framerate then some people.

EDIT: Something else to consider, Onslaught is, in general, much more demanding then most of the other maps/modes. That obviously taints my experience because I haven't played a non-onslaught game of ut2004 yet . I was just thinking about when I was playing UT2003 and the framerates were significantly higher then what I'm seeing in onslaught now.

My favorite thing about UT2004 is that there's no camping!

What's a good site to download popular maps?
