The bottom line is you're leasing the domain name. You will never, ever have full control or ownership of that domain name. ICANN owns and controls them all and allows registrars like GoDaddy to act as certified resellers.

That being said, go with someone reputable like Network Solutions. I've never once heard of "hover" or "namecheap" and wouldn't personally trust them or their support.

Any reputable registrar will allow you to buy domain names without a hosting package, then you go into the DNS settings for that domain and point them to whatever IP you want (your servers in this case).

I assume that it is common knowledge that while there is some Staples that society understands that they have to be provided as part of human support (like food and shelter). Internet Domains are Not (and justifiably so) part of the welfare system.

Godday TLDs cost very little because they make thr revenue on Hosting.

Otherwise, give or take few $$ that is how the picture look like.

We purchased our domain through namecheap years ago. No issues. Now we use them for hosting and it's been fine except for their use for their antiquated spam filtering on their mail system.

An easy way that's free is to go to No-IP.com. You have to use one of their many domaiins but you can put your own tld on in. Like MyDomain.no-ip.com.

I've used Namecheap for domains for more than five years. No issues at all. Transferred to NameSilo a few months ago because they offer free WHOIS privacy, which I prefer to have on some of my domains (Namecheap has a yearly renewal fee on WHOIS privacy). I liked the Namecheap control panel better, but you don't have to go there very often, so it's OK.

If you are planning on running your own servers and want as much control over your domain as possible, best solution for you is to host your own name servers.

Use any registrar to purchase and point NS to your own.

This.
-------------------------

Domain Registration is about $11 - $14 a year.

Hosting can be found for few Domain for about $4 a month.

$4 x $12 = $48 + $12= $60 for a year or $5 per month.

There might be some place costing a $1 more and a $1 less but that the way it is and No "Drama Queening" around it will help.

That said, if one wants to host on One's home private server.

One needs an ISP's static IP (which usually cost more), or a Dynamic IP Service (DynNS.org, No-IP.com).

If Dynamic IP Service is used the cost of Registrening an ICANN domain can be saved. and a free Domain like I am a cheapguy.No-IP.com can be used to host at Home.

If the hosting is totally for self use and not for greneral public it is OK to use cheapguy.No-IP.com, for genral public it has a negative connotation and general public tend not to log to sites on Dynamic IP Services'.

You could always register as a 'registrar' if you wanted more 'ultimate control'

Largely a waste though, any ICANN accredited registrar can provide you what you want, and you have flexibility by rolling your own nameservers.

Really all Godaddy or anyone else are doing for you is submitting a registration request to ICANN. Outside of that there isn't any 'additional ownership' of internet domain names.

Namecheap is great, GoDaddy and Network Solutions are feces (avoid at all cost). I've used Namecheap as a registrar for years, no problems, and wrestled a domain away from Network Solutions just this year. Just read the reviews yourself.

Network Solutions
GoDaddy
Namecheap

EDIT: Avoid anything to do with Web.com (Network Solutions, Register.com, etc)

I've switched to Namesilo myself. I got a year free with the transfer too!

Also, Namesilo has a two-factor App for your smartphone so that no one can hijack your domain.

You do not say why you want a domain name. If you have a particular domain name in mind my experience with namecheap.com for my domains for the past several years has been very good. If you just want a domain name to use that will allow easy access to a dynamic IP address, or to experiment with, I might try http://freedns.afraid.org. They have a lot of domains available that you can use to create sub domains with and they are free. I have used freedns.afraid.org’s stealth DNS services for my registered domain names for manyyears. Josh Anderson is the owner and he has always been very helpful and I cannot say enough good things about him.

As an aside, I did use Godaddy but I stopped several years ago for two reasons. First of all I was relaying my outgoing email through their SMTP servers and my email was frequently being blocked at the destination because so many of their mail servers spent time on various DNSBLs. Complaining to Godaddy about the problem was useless. The second reason was because of their original position on SOPA. The fact that I was having trouble with their mail servers made it real easy to join the “Dump Godaddy” campaign. I never went back because of the email problems.

Namecheap were great at one time...now not so much. The support folks say they can support requests that take truly two minutes, you will wait weeks and hear apologies.

The thing is all services offering domain registration are resellers. If you have your own servers, you have your own hosting, which means you are not obligated to follow any rules. Which no one can block your domain, if you are breaking their rules. Full control is available for no matter what kind of domain registering service you use in case if you don't use third party's hosting service.
