I can confirm this isn't true. I'm not a chat-room guy by any means. I use it to keep in touch with friends and that's all. I've had my AIM name for 7 years now and I've only started to receive spam through it just this year... through no apparent cause of my own. They just find ya...

I've been getting porn spam instant messages for the last couple of months. I remember it happened 3 times in one day, but recently it's almost stopped.

The whitelist program would reply to unverified accounts and ask it to respond with some unique number, just like Anandtech did when you opened your account. Since there can be thousands of varying configurations/programs, spamming programs wouldn't get through while a human who needs to talk, can.

you ask them for their IM name and add them to your buddy list

Never get those on Trillian...although one time this person IMed me masquerading (I am only assuming) as the female proprieter of one of said websites desiring access to my FTP. I gave them points for being clever, but they weren't redeemable on the FTP.
