Dumb question, I know, but what about this game makes it better/worse than Baldur's Gate?

I've played BG but not PS:T. Just wondering.

This game took the BG engine and went the opposite way Icewind Dale did. Icewind was a more action oriented dungeon crawler, light on story. (Which is fine, I loved those games) PS:T took the Infinity engine and made it into a storytelling device. That's not to say there's not a lot of combat. There is. However, it's not uncommon to play the game for an hour or more and not enter any combat. It's not the sole focus of the game.

How is the combat in PS:T? I could go for a great story driven RPG because I found DA:O to be a huge flop just because of the combat. I felt I had to micromanage each battle to not get slaughtered. I'm normally a fan of "One man army"ing it up and this seems party based? Does it suffer from being party based and what looks to be active combat?

and

It's my first playthrough and I just hit level 6 with the warrior class, should I switch over to mage/thief or just stick with warrior? Doesn't seem like you can multi-class, so you might as well just stick with one class the whole way or am I wrong?

The combat is party based, more or less identical to BG. Some of the rules are a bit twisted. Your character, even as a fighter, never wears armor. Your companions do. Instead of dual/multi-classing you are able to switch between classes more or less at will. So, you can play as a pure fighter, mage, or thief, if you want to. You shouldn't. All classes are pretty useful. And, for every level you make, you get to add a point to a stat. (or was it every few levels?) You'll want to pump your stats up as much as possible. That's where the game gets fun. When your Strength, Wisdom, Intelligence, or Charisma get insanely high, you have a lot of fun options.

Got the Forgotten Realms pack a long time ago and played the crap out of it.
No time anymore. Between my clubs and college I just cant invest hundreds of hours like I used to.

Temple is so much fun. It's a great engine. I was really sad it didn't hit the numbers to make more games. I was really hoping someone would grab it and take advantage.

Are there fan made campaigns of quality or just fan fixes ?

I was waiting for that one. I might go and buy BG1 and BG2 when I get home.

Very awesome. I haven't played either since they came out when I was in College, and I had no time to play games during that time.

I will definitely be getting BG2, however, I still need to finish BG1. I seem to be stuck in a tower and what I expect to happen is not happening. Not good as I may have run into a bug.

For reference we already have plenty of threads on Baldurs Gate 2 fix packs. Search around PC gaming and you will find them.
Theres a user patch to get it running properly at any resolution you like. And plenty of different ways to get BG1 and 2 running together under the BG2 engine, which is much better.

For someone who has never played a non Forgotten Realms D&D game, what is the difference from FR to Greyhawk? Is it just the lore, basically? No Faerun but instead a different 'world' altogether?

I heard ToEE was extremely buggy when it came out(I think) and that may have been why I never tried it. Or was that Pool of Radiance? It's been awhile.

Greyhawk and Forgotten Realms are completely different universes in the Dungeons & Dragons mythos. FR is probably the most fleshed out of all the campaign settings, because everytime they moved (D&D, AD&D, 2nd edition, 3rd edition and so on) they kept adding to the world. It is very much like Tolkeins Middle Earth. Greyhawk is closer to a traditional medieval Europe but still has magic and elves and shit. Theres also Dark Sun which feels a lot like Dune but without the lasers. Al Queda which is ancient fantasy Arabia. Birthright. Ravenloft (gothic) and Eberron. Not to mention the Mystara and Hallow world campaign settings which came from classic D&D and were eventually transferred to AD&D.

But all that is mostly for tabletop play. In the video games they usually only show a small fraction of the world and it is often revamped for what the programmers want to see.
Having said that, BG2 is probably the closest interpretation of the world books I have ever seen. They put a lot of effort into making you feel like you'r actually playing Dungeons & Dragons in Faerun.

Shit, I forgot about Planescape and Spelljammer. That was stupid given the nature of the thread.

Wow I'll be dropping some money at Gog. ToEE however was had such a terribly bad interface that I couldn't stand to play it the first time around.
