Another note about the Galaxy front end. It is only used for management. You don't have to have it running once your game is installed in order to play your games. Just a bit of fyi.

To clarify this even more, the Galaxy client is a brand-new beta-ish thing. You do not need it AT ALL. You can just download, install and play a GoG game without ever touching Galaxy. But if you want a more "Steam-like" interface that collects all your GoG games together, then you may like Galaxy.

I'm not interested in blind speculation. If you don't have any specific information to prove that these changes were intentional, and to explain exactly why they were made, then you're playing as much of a guessing game as I am, and you might as well save it.
It isn't "blind" speculation. Did you read the response of the guy who replied to the thread you started you on GOG's forum?

"I remember something about this, though I don't remember the specifics I checked my game updates folder and found I had stored the retail user.ltx file with some screenshots. Edit, thinking about it some more and I think this might not be the default user.ltx, it may be related to fixing or improving something (possibly shadow related).
"
http://www.gog.com/forum/stalker_se...mpletely_different_ini_settings_to_retail_soc

The guy knows enough about it that he previously did comparison screenshots and vaguely recalls it may be shadow related. A shadow rendering issue on some cards is the first thing that sprung to my mind too, especially given people are complaining about it in the Steam version to which the solution was to modify the "user.ltx" file and change the very same "sun near border", etc, variables you're complaining about). As mentioned, the quickest way for you to find your "non speculative" solid answer would be to contact GOG support directly and ask them, but in the mean time, if you don't want to believe anything anyone else says, that's entirely up to you. It's not as if the "pure" retail version didn't suffer from shadow flickering requiring exactly the same tweaks to fix as described on multiple forums across the net.

I tend to agree with BSim500 - I'll bet the flickering shadows is exactly why they changed the config. I didn't connect the dots earlier.

I have that problem in the retail version (and also in GOG's version if I re-use my retail config), but the visual impact is relatively minor for me (only occasionally seen in the most extreme camera periphery), so I never worried about it.

They probably reprogrammed the game menu to write out values to work around the problem.

They've also probably made changes to Clear Sky to stop it from crashing as a result of the latest platform update needed for Internet Explorer.

Never bought from GOG before, but this seems like a good time. Free Battle Realms for signing up and Arcanum for $1.49.

'D&D Remade' bundle looks good too, even though I have the first Baldur's Gate Enhanced as well as all of those games on original disks...

Very happy about the free game. It's been on my wishlist for a while, just never pulled the trigger.

I owned a hard copy, but never had the expansion.

So how does this summer sale work, is it similar to humble bundle where you get free game the more money you spend? If so I really miss out.

Well the usual sales and bundle discounts. They do have an offer for a free game if you spend
$1 - Simcity 2000
$20 - Stalker Clear Sky
$50 - Xenonaughts

Cool I'll get Risen and a free copy of Simcity 2000 (never actually play that game ) for $2!

Wish each telltale games was less than $5 though.

Looks like this is the end of the sale. Everything that was on sale for a limited time previously, is now on sale again.

No, it's nowhere near the end. It is over on the 21st. This is just a big "everything day" because the Steam sale supposedly starts very soon. That said, there might not be any new discounts on anything that hasn't already been on sale.

Do you guys think telltale game walking dead and the wolf among us is worth the price at 75% off? It still feel too expensive for such as short but amazing game.

I'm tempted by the original HOMM3 for $4 but I've been spoiled by the more relaxed pace of the King's Bounty series. It's nice not having to rush the enemy castles as quickly as possible before they get too powerful to overcome.

They had the new Kings Bounty on sale a few days ago, for some ridiculous price. Dark Side I think it was called....I enjoyed it.

Yeah I don't plan to buy anything till the last actual day. If they decide to change around this time and not have a final sale on everything again, guess it's just gonna be a short checkout.

They are both well worth that price. While no they aren't blow your head off FPS, they are more like a choose your own adventure/interactive story and very well done at that.

I wouldn't even call those 'games'. There's no real gameplay, they're just semi-interactive cut scenes. For that reason I don't believe they are worth purchasing, because you can just watch someone else "play" them on youtube and get the same - or better* - experience. You're not really missing out on any compelling gameplay, because there is none.

I've played through season 1 of TWD (plus 400 days) and I could not possibly disagree more with this statement. Watching it on YouTube would totally take away all the pressure of making decisions, many of them with limited time.

I remember playing that quite a bit, though HOMM2 was my favourite. I actually had it in my basket just now, but forgot to check out before the offer ran out...

Quick question for you GOG users: Do you often buy games you already own on GOG instead of trying to get the ones you have to work on newer systems?

I'm specifically thinking about games like the ones in the Baldur's Gate series and HOMM2&3 on something like Win 7...

I've purchased a number of older games I have on CD from GoG just for the convenience of having them available for download.

I spent too much on this sale, unlocked all 3 free games even though I wasn't setting out to do that.

I've bought ones that I'm likely to replay or they have a lot of replay value.

I've lost a few CD's due to Disk rot, so it's a good idea to get a digital copy for these type games.

*Cut scenes laden with QTEs is one of the things I hate most about modern games, and that's essentially all TWAU is. Therefore, there's a good incentive for me NOT to purchase it, and watch it streamed instead. To be honest, I'd have been more inclined to purchase it had it been a regular non-interactive movie.

There are multi-choice outcomes, but I wasn't really concerned about those in the first place, and the person who's stream I was watching made exactly the same choices I would have anyway.

TWAU is actually very well done (story, voice, dialogue, art), but personally I wouldn't spend anything on it. It's worth less to me on my PC than it is watching someone else play it on youtube.

They are some of the best games you could ever play though. The first time I downloaded season 1 of episode 1 of the walking dead, I didn't expect much because I didn't like back to the future. Boy, was I wrong but at $5 dollars for 2 hours per episode was just overprice. Watching on Youtube is not the same even if it logically make sense.

I also bought a lot of good games that have longevity and high replay values and yet I never finish those and it should in reality seem more of a waste. I have to admit, your really missing out. I can't imagine how watching someone play any game even if it an interactive movies is the same as yourself playing, but to each his own.

Also thanks for your input.
