My 9700 is being returned, lots of problems and died.
So I went to BB and got a 9800.

Can I just replace the card or do I have to remove the
cat 3.4 drivers and install something else for a 9800 card?

thanks big time for any help

It's almost the same card actually. I'm pretty sure you don't have to change drivers or anything.

You need to mail me your 9700, as quickly as possible.

Seriously, I'd uninstall the old drivers per ATi's instructions, turn off the PC, swap cards, reboot, and install the latest drivers to be safe, as the 9800 is slightly different than the 9700.

Well I went and picked up one.
stock clock is 297/263
man thats slow memory

but I tried some oc and torture demo in q3
max it would go is 330/325

I think the 9800 pro is 380/340 so this won't
get anywhere close to a stock pro.

Overall I guess its not bad.

If you are thinking of a 9800 pro get the pro
Not sure about any others but this sure won't do it.

That's a very low clock--others have mentioned about 325/290. Try asking other 9800 owners what the stock speed is supposed to be, because at 300/260, you may be better off with a 275/270 9700 for $205.

I tried one of the 9800's from Best Buy and it was clocked 324/290 out of the box. I got it up to 405/324 and was disapointed in the mid 12XXX 3dmark 2001 scores I was getting. I took it back and found one of the 9700PRO's on clearance for 249.99. It does almost identical 3dmark scores as the 9800np and overclocks to 357/337. After talking to an unusually sharp Tech at Best Buy, I realized that the rest of my system was a bottleneck to both of the vid cards.

Sorry I can't read my notes. This card stock is 324/290
max on the memory is 330 but after about 30 minutes of
Q3 looping it craps out.

If you got 405 on the core that good. This one wont go 335.

From what I can find only thing different in the 9700 and the 9800
is an F buffer. (I am not going to touch that line LOL)

The 9700 is still the better price point. And will work fine until
we all go to the new pci standard.

Althought I have been hearing that half life 2 will use the new 9800
features a little better....whooooopeeee ROFL

may have to reinstall drivers, since windows will see it as a different card, but you can use the SAME drivers for it

beware, when reinstalling the 3.4s (going from one ati card to another) windows farked on me and i had to reinstall

3.2s seem good though, so far...maybe its just the 8500 *shrug*

Add/remove programs, shut down, swap the cards, reboot then install whatever drivers you like.

Can you clarify for a dummy like me, do you mean you have a 9800 non-pro wishing you got the 9800 pro?
