Going from smartphone to dumbphone...anyone done it?

Just thinking about having to give up my smartphone (iPhone) gives me the shivers.

They only have 2 smartphones. One Android and one Blackberry. And neither one is particularly good.

I'd still chose crappy smartphone over dumbphone.

Like you already said, even though you may not use the data all the time, when you really needed it, it saved your ass. This is reason enough to keep it.

Yeah but thats not the point. The choice between dumb phone and smart phone was not the decision we were looking at right there in those two posts.
I was responding to a dude who asked why we dont move over to Virgin Mobile seeing as how they have smartphones. My answer was, they have a limited selection of crappy smart phones. For now I'd rather stick with a quality phone and limited plan at a big carrier.
Maybe next time around (November I think) I will look at a Sprint branded phone to be used on Virgin (if they allow it) or unlocked CDMA phone to be used on Virgin. If they allow it.

If not then Virgin isnt really a good option. At least for me. The OP on the other hand should know he has choices, even if they arent very good. And if he likes the iPhone his choices are even worse. He'd need an unlocked, jailbroken version and hope T-mobile lets him bring it over with a pay-as-you-go plan. Also the AT&T 3g is different from T-mobile 3g so he'd be using 1X and Wifi all the time. Which is not great.

Well, Virgin Mobile does have one of the few Samsung Android phones that runs 2.2!

In fact, the Intercept got a 2.2 OTA before anything else Samsung in the USA did.

Good news!!! Talked to my project manager yesterday about cell phones and asked him if the company would cover a portion of the bill if I got a single cell phone for both work & personal use. The only potential problem I can see would be if I want to get a direct connect smart phone and the selection is rather limited. Doesn't really matter at the moment though because my current VZW contract isn't up for another 5 months.

I did. I went from the HTC Hero back to Samsung Rant. I mostly texted and talked anyways so a data plan was not all the worthwhile for me. At least not for the price. I wouldnt mind having a smartphone again if data plans were more responable.

Also i love the battery life. Hero would be dead by 6pm. Rant still has juice after 3 days.

Theres nothing wrong with being efficient, but you should try to acknowledge that having a smart phone and giving it up would probably be worse than crack or nicotine or caffeine.
Once you get used to having a world of information in your pocket you wont like leaving it behind. I too will probably go with one of the little carriers that provides unlimited data for a reasonable price, cuz deep down inside I know theres no other way.
