Constant use of a proxy is as good as it will get. Proxy via a public place like a library or other wireless connection, rotate around. Not as comfortable as your mom's basement

Almost all the free online services have some clause in their TOS that states your data becomes their data once you use the service. I don't really like this myself. To get around this you pretty much have to pay for your services.

I like Netaddress for email. I have used them since the 1990s. They have SSL POP3 and SMTP servers and a good privacy policy. Good web mail interface but I rarely use it. Can get email on your blackberry/treo/other smart phone too.

I use Ask.Com for my home page/search engine.

I used to pay for FTP/HTTP service but I have since started hosting it myself. I know exactly who has control of my data - me!

I don't see any problem with not wanting to use Google, Yahoo!, Facebook, MySpace, etc.
