I currently have an aging PS/2 mouse. Should I replace it with a PS/2 or USB? I have two USB ports that have never been used. Which would you get?

so there really aren't any advantages/disadvantages of either port? I'll just get whatever I like better, to hell with the port!

sorry Viper and DAM, I made this post before I saw your posting

PS/2. USB mice have a number of disadvantages, in my mind:

- No safe mode support
- Limited to 125 hz
- Freeze under high CPU load, annoying as hell

I'm VERY pleased with my Logitech Optical Wheelmouse, the funky blue & silver one.

I was looking at one of those Logitech ps/2 optical mice with the blinking red light on the box

Sacotool,

My girlfriend and roommate both own that mouse. I have never experienced what Viper is talking about as far as slowing down, and to me using USB offers smoother, faster response while gaming, which is important to me if I'm playing Quake 3. The safe mode support could be an issue, but any USB mouse you buy, will almost always come with a ps/2 adapter. The logitech is that way as well.

Mine is USB, but I only use it with the PS/2 adapter. I had it's little brother, the Wheelmouse USB for a while, & hated it. The mouse itself was fine, physically identical to it's PS/2 counterpart. I just didn't like the USB experience. Once you're used to 200 hz, 125 seems awfully slow.

I have an Intellimouse explorer and it isnt giving me any problems at all.
it is very smooth.
When i tried it on a ps/2 port it could only do 92 hz when i set it to 200hz.
When I put it on the usb port, it is 125hz

Get the Logitech Optical. Very good mouse. You'll be surprised at the difference in an optical from a traditional mouse.

No mouse on earth beats the Logitech Trackman Marble Wheel... I used to hate trackballs, but now this is the only pointing device I will use on my home system, and it works GREAT for gaming, as well as... uh... That, um, OTHER stuff you do with a mouse...

I like my Logitech Cordless Wheel Mouse.. no cords, a lot of freedom. Dowsides: 1. low refresh rate, if you're used to overclocking your mouse, you cant do it with this one, it will give only standard mouse refresh rates. 2. uses 2 AA batteries which you have to replace every couple of months. But the mouse is excellent, very worth those downsides, works up to 10 ft away too. Goes very nice with a wireless keyboard combo.

kw3i...

I'm talking CPU usage spikes, for example when a CD autoplays. The mouse would freeze for a second, & then continue working fine. Switched back to PS/2, & haven't had a problem since.

Been using my USB Trackman for quite a while now, and NEVER had a problem. Even during high cpu usage. Before that I owned the previoud model of the same mouse, without the scroll wheel, and in PS/2. It was a good mouse to. That fact of the matter is, once your thumb touches that little wheel, you'll realize how foollish you must have looked moving a stupid little plastic toy around your desk trying to get the pointer to move.<grin>

I guess everybody has a personal prefernce as far as mice goes.

But mine is better than yours!!! <grin> <j/k>

Must be a logitech problem, you weren't installing the drivers perchance were you? I have an intellimouse explorer and have never had any of the problems you listed, mine even works in safe mode.

Viper,

I've been using an optical intellimouse for over 6 months and never had a mouse related freeze or lockup of any kind.

I even use it for UT and it works great.

Can't go wrong with a MS Optical or larger and more expensive (yet not worth it in my mind) Explorer.

That's what I am using now, but it's starting to get a little long in the tooth. I've had it for 3 years now, and it's time to move on.

Maybe I'm not explaining this clearly enough...

What I noticed was brief mouse hangs when programs started, when a CD autoplayed, etc. I never had the problem with a PS/2 mouse, & haven't had it since my switch back to PS/2. The system never froze or crashed, it would just lose mouse response for a second or two.
