Going to Costa Rica

I picked up a guide book, I reserved the tickets yesterday so now I'm ready to go

The plan is to fly to San Jose, rent a car and then go around sampling a bit of everything. So far I have main attractions:
- the volcanoes (arenal and paos or irazu)
- national parks (manuel antonio, monteverde)
- surfing (around Jaco)

Anyone have any specific suggestions? I'd love to hear them.

Take plenty of condoms. That stuff is legal there.

We went to San Jose for a cpl days and Jaco beach for a few days. The drive is CRAZY. Alot of up and down mountains with no side rails and narrow roadways. Good luck if you are driving it yourself!

When you get to Jaco, go to Beetle Bar and Monkey Bar. That whole area actually is pretty jumpin at night. Again, bring lots of condoms.

Do not miss Arenal and Manuel Antonio. Also, if you're staying in San José at all, stay at the Hotel Don Carlos. I've stayed at several of the "nicer" hotels, and the Don Carlos is by far the best place to stay (best rooms, best breakfast, nicest place to hang out, good location, the works).

Another thing I found yesterday is the area in the southern Nicoya Peninsula

Slightly quickly, remote, underdeveloped, supposedly the best beaches there. Sounds like a good compliment to places like Jaco and Manuel Antonio.

Whitewater rafting on the Pacaure river, (said to be the 2nd best in the world for class 4 and 5 rapids). Twenty mile one day trip is the best, be sure to take a waterproof camera, there are lots of waterfalls and plenty of wildlife to photograph. This trip includes breakfast and lunch and will take a whole day to complete. I have taken this trip twice and enjoyed both!! Also if you plan on driving, make sure you speak the language--there are no street signs and easy to get lost!! A GPS would be a must if you cannot speak Spanish.
