Its happening tomorrow morning. N2O and a optional saline based sedative( that I opted in for), will be administered for me. It's happening early in the morning. Out of the four wisdom teeth that have to be removed, three of them are impacted. The orthopedic surgeon only told me to not drink or eat anything in the morning, and to just come. The orthopedic surgeon also didn't give me anything for prepping for the thing I have tomorrow. I am not doing a PSA here about this, so let me get straight to the point why I am posting this here.

I already asked my dad for his experience as to what happens or how it feels after the removal, but I also want to get a greater idea from everyone else as well. What should I be expecting after the thing?

Expect to be out like a light when the IV kicks in. Expect to wake up in a recovery room with chipmonk cheeks full of spit. Novicain will leaving you drooling like a basset hound for a few hours so be careful when you tip your head because bloody spit will pour out of your mouth. If they offer you pain drugs, take them, at least for the first day. Then try to wean yourself as soon as you are able. Follow whatever directions the oral surgeon gives you as far as oral hygiene goes. Don't plan anything productive for the first day and maybe the second. Don't drive.

You left me with many questions.

Question 1: Why not to plan anything productive? If your thinking of physically productive then.... that's not an issue, only things I did productive in the past few days all required me to use my laptop. If you also mean that, may you explain why not to do that as well, and how would the operation affect such tasks?

Question 2: Am I allowed to drink ice cold water after the operation, or is that more of a question to ask the surgeon?

Question 3: Should I take melatonin to go to sleep tonight? I sometimes take melatonin, the over the counter ones made by CVS, not the very high mg tablets.

I think the word you want is orthodontic.

PS: I had all 3 of mine removed when I was 17.

I had mine done as an out-patient at a hospital due to my congenital heart condition.

You aren't getting shit done. I was home by 11 and the nurse woke me up with a call at 5. There were 3 'ofols...including Jackson's demise. Later, Dr said that he didn't trust me to stay immobile so he jacked me up. Worked.

The colonoscopy was much less dosing. A bit more invasive though.

I had my regular dentist take mine out two at a time. I was sore for a few days but it wasn't a big deal. I also didn't find the prescription pain pills any better than OTC pills.

As long as the novicain lasts, bloody drool pours out of your mouth every time you move your head. If you have a ThinkPad, it might be fine as the drool will pour right through. The pain drugs will ruin your concentration. The brain tends toward static. I don't care for the feeling myself but some people live their lives that way.

Ask your surgeon about the water and tell your surgeon and the anesthesiologist about the melatonin (what dose, how often, and the last time you took it). Bring the bottle with you. I have no idea if there are any drug interactions with the anesthesia they will give you but there may well be. Seriously, don't blow this off.

Fun stuff. I'm on a list to get mine done too at 33. One was easy and removed before but 3 are left. One is turned 90 degree pointed towards the root of another tooth. I started feeling swelling in my jaw and I assume it's because of those (I hope) so I asked my dentist to get them removed. Just need to wait for a call now... There's a specialist that comes from Toronto every now and then and does it on the weekend so basically have to wait till they call me, I hope it's not too last minute so I can make sure I'm off that day.

I'm a tad nervous since us gingers are hard to knock out, I hope they know to dial up the gas a notch lol.

I can't help but wonder what they did in the old days before dentists were even a thing.

Novicaine is no longer used, I read on google that lidocaine is now used.

I seriously doubt they didn't use any numbing ( or numbling ).

I had mine removed in my early twenties. Two were impacted. I opted to stay awake through it, with lots of Novocaine. I didn't feel any pain really but it was kind of a disturbing experience. If I had to do it over would definitely get knocked out.

Just be sure to tell anyone that you have contact to tell you if you have bad breath. Wet sockets and all.
