Going to LA and San Francisco...Where to stay?

In August I will be making the long trip from Florida to California. I will be spending one night on LA and have already made a reservation at the following hotel.

Ramada Inn - Hollywood near Universal Studios

1160 N Vermont Ave
Los Angeles, CA 90029
USA

I heard the other day that this area is "seedy." Can anyone let me know if they have any experience at this hotel or area. I want to make sure that we are in a clean/safe area. If I should change, where should we stay? I want to be somewhat near to all the LA attractions.

i have only been to LA once, and I stayed very near the UCLA campus. It was middle and upper middle class neighborhood and a short cab ride from hollywood.

what is your budget on hotels?

It's not really "near" Universal Studios. That's in the valley on the other side of the mountain.

Let us know what you're budget is. I'm sure there are plenty of better neighborhoods to could stay in.

Edit: I'm not sure of hotels there, but if you drive about 2 miles North, you'll be in Los Feliz which is a nicer place to be.

There's a new Holiday Inn on Highland Ave. which might be closer what you're looking for. Prices seem to be about $20 more a night than the other hotel, though.

My budget is anywhere up to say...$120/night.

Not sure if you know about it, but go to SideStep and install it.

If you do a search for Los Angeles, The Grafton on Sunset should come up. The price it gave me was $119.95 a night, but I just picked some random August dates.

This is a really nice hotel that's RIGHT on the Sunset Strip. If it's not what you're looking for, just IM me (the info's in my profile) and I'll help ya find a place that's closer to what you're looking for.

Is that Hyatt Nice? I have never been west of Tennessee, So I only know a little bit about CA.

The Embarcadero Hyatt is niiiiiiiiiice. There's so much to do in that area, as well.

The Embarcadero Mall is right downstairs...
If you want to do some sightseeing, the F-line is right downstairs... That takes you to Pier 39 and all along Fisherman's Wharf.
The Equinox is right upstairs... (The Equinox is a revolving restaurant at the top floor of the Hyatt).

Overall, you picked a pretty good place to stay while visiting SF.
