i'm going to nyc for labor day weekend, any suggestions for hotels? ie, what are some good areas to stay at, i've never been on east coast b4. price range $150 or less

When I don't have enough space for them, I usually send my guests to the Washington Jefferson on 51st and 8th (851 8th Ave), because it's across the street from my house and that puts them right in the middle of the tourist action, near all the broadway shows and Times Square. Prices are ok and the rooms are clean. Nothing fancy, just convenient and affordable, and 51st Street is fairly quiet. The room should be in the $100-130 range. In the same price range, you could also find a room in one of the major chain hotels. Up to you...

Also try www.hoteldiscount.com, that's where I usually find the best prices.

Ok, just read the intro on the Washington Jefferson page:

"Where Broadway meets Fifth Avenue!"

Wrong! 5th Avenue meets Broadway at 23rd street...

"Within walking distance of the theatre district, Radio City, Times Square, Rockefeller Center, Central Park and Lincoln Center."

True.

"The WJ is in an area of New York designated as a 'historic landmark' where the tallest building is only six stories high!"

Wrong again! The Worldwide Plaza is 50-something stories high and just one block south.

"From our entrance is 'restaurant row' offering to the discerning traveler the unique and variety of menus from around the world. "

Wrong! The real restaurant row is on 46th street. But it's true that there are many restaurants on 51st...


My friends who stayed there didn't complain, but I hope the description of the rooms is a little more accurate than the above! lol

One Word: Hotwire

Hotwire kicks ass. I saved $60 for one night's stay in downtown San Fran. Great hotel and great location. I can imagine that it would help for New York too.

Some friends stayed at the Hotel Newton in the West 90's on Broadway a few weeks ago. Seemed like a decent place when I picked them up and they had no complaints.
