Hi All,

So we're going to NYC for our honeymoon in 2 weeks, flying into la guardia and staying at the the marriott in midtown manhattan.

Going to be there for 4.5 days.

I'd like to see the cool stuff in manhattan, also get to the bronx, queens, and brooklyn, anything interesting to see in those places? Any restaurants we can't pass up? I'd love to fine some real authentic ethnic food, italian especially.

Also, in addition to footpounding an walking, what's the best way to get around and from manhattan to the other boroughs? Subway? Any subway tips?

Thanks!

It's going to be in the 80's when you visit there and when it gets hot people sweat and in the subways with no airflow it gets really smelly down there. You said you want some authentic italian food well New York Style pizza should fit the bill

Oh and make sure you keep your wallet in your front pocket when walking around. Don't want to be pick-pocketed by all those NY low lives.

Nothing beats the Subway to get around the city. If you go to Queens, go to Astoria for the food and the nightlife.

I can give you a guided tour...

Oh, yeah, and don't forget to keep up the pace when walking in the Subway... tourists are usually very slow there, making us New Yorkers angry....

There's some nice places in Queens, but it's a bit of a ride. You can take the 7 train and check out World's Fair, Citifield stadium and also Arthur Ashe. Since you want ethnic, if you like chinese/korean food, there's tons of them in Flushing (next stop on the train).

There's tons of things to do in Manhattan. If you go to Times Square, walk over to 9th ave. There's a lot of restaurant there that you can check out.

Since you're only here for 4.5 day, I don't think it's worth checking out anything outside of Manhattan though.

I'd say to check out a baseball game if anyone is playing at home while you're there. The pizza is, generally, out of this world. Unfortunately, I don't have any restaurant names for you.

Subway is the easiest/best way to get around, but it is hot, stuffy, and smelly down there. Metrocards will serve you well.

If you plan on going all over the place then the NYC transit system is really your best bet unless you're filthy rich and can afford paying for the taxi fares. Get a 1-week unlimited pass for I think $27 even though you'll be there for 4-5 days since the single day pass is $8.25 and single ride is $2.25.

Most of the NYC attractions are in Manhattan though.

And don't try to pick one up either thinking you're doing someone a favour or the cops will tackle you thinking you're a theif.

For Bronx there's the zoo and the botanical garden, to me the zoo is only so so, but you might enjoy the botanical garden. In Queens, honestly, there's nothing much to see during the time of your visit, you can take a walk in the park with that giant globe statue thing, but the park isn't very scenic, it's just gigantic. So skip queens and if you want nice korean food it's right by Harold square, if you want chinese food there's chinatown. In brooklyn there's coney island and brooklyn museum right next to prospect park, I am unsure if you can hit all 3 in 1 day, if you can't you might want to just pick one.

For italian just head down to little italy. Hit up Ferrara for desserts after your meal.

if you want real japanese food don't pass up st mark's place.

For Italian skip the Little Italy in Manhattan (too touristy) and head to the better Little Italy centered around Arthur Avenue in the Bronx.

Thanks a lot guys, I'll digest this and keep the info coming!

Is Coney Island worth the trip, or is it a dump?

What about Atlantic City? Any casino shuttles or anyhting that take you there?

Yes, there are buses downtown that'll take you to Atlantic City, Foxwoods, or Mohegan Sun but I'm not sure you'll want to go. The trip is at least 3 hours each way barring any major traffic. These casinos are by no means anywhere near NYC, Atlantic City is upstate, and the other 2 are in CT.

edit: Coney Island is about 45mins-1hr subway ride from Manhattan. Can't really tell ya from a tourist perspective if it's worth the visit. I guess if you like scenery, it's as good as anywhere else but to me it's just a dirty and overcrowded beach. There is an aquarium around there though and if you do decide to go, the trip will take up a good chunk of your day.

Huh? Atlantic City isn't even in NY, it's well south of Manhattan in New Jersey. You can take a bus from the Port Authority terminal for dirt cheap since the casinos sponsor them. Atlantic City would be a slightly better bet than the Connecticut casinos due to travel time. From Manhattan you can get to AC in a little over 2 hours if traffic is friendly, the CT ones would be more like 3 hours.

OK we'll skip AC. Didn't realize it was that far away. Shows like NYPD Blue and Sopranos give one the impression that it's much closer!

Definitely get an unlimited multi-day subway pass. It'll save you a ton. When I was last there in 2007 with a buddy of mine, 95% of the time we took the subway and it made getting around really easy. Just get a map it's easy enough to figure out.

Ground zero, Empire State Bldg, Rockefeller center, Statue of Liberty, Wall Street, Brooklyn Bridge are just a few of the must-see places.

Also, I've heard with the down economy it's real easy to get tickets to most plays. May want to look into that before.

Avoid all Times Square restaurants, unless you are a tourist from some small town in the middle of nowhere and are bringing your 12 other extended family members that are there on the trip with you.

Like bigrash suggested, there are plenty of nice restaurants along 9th ave, and it makes a good walk on a warm summers day.

Living in nyc, I've never been. But I hear that the view is great at the empire state building. I hear the view is awesome if you like to take pictures and whatnot.

https://tickets.esbnyc.com/ - tickets are about $19/person I think.
