I was going to wear thermals, thick pants, thick shirt, and rent a mask/headgear and gun.

..one of the girls going said she's buying a mask from a local shop (are the ones you rent nasty or something?)

Anything else? Do I need/want a cup?

EDIT:

http://classic-paintball.com/classic/classicservices.htm

That's where we're going...

EDIT 2:

Went and had a GREAT time!! Left with a couple of bruises, but nothing bad.. They do have an fps cap, but I swear I think some people adjust their guns afterwards or something..

No cup needed. You should wear some gloves (I hate how every singe time I've gone, one has hit me in that meet between the thumb and index finger).

What conditions are you playing in? I'd forgo the thermals because you'll get hot fast with the extra pods you're wearing on your back. Get kneepads too.

Never got shot in the nuts? You must not go often enough.

Haha, you might want one. One thing to watch out for: look for the guy that practicing firing his paintball gun on the range to make sure his air settings are correct. If you see him turn up the settings in an attempt to get as much force as possible out of the gun, get on his team. I've seen people who liked to draw blood with a paintball.

Also, kids don't stop shooting. I played on a team against random people. Both teams were a combination of kids and adults. Well, someone from their team shot me so I put my hands up and turned around to walk into the safe area (my first paintball experience). Some little kid took aim at me when I turned around and shot me several times in the back and one hit me in the neck, ouch. So don't surrender when kids are around as I'm not sure they understand the concept.

I would suggest wearing batting gloves or something similar. You get shot on the hands a lot because your gun is usually exposed the most, and those finger shots can hurt a lot. Gloves definitely help to deflect some of the shot.

Gloves

Neck/throat protector (towel or something to the effect)

No thermals (depends on temps but you may get hot real quick)

Use the field rental mask but make sure the lenses aren't scratched too bad.

WTF? The place you played didn't regulate the speeds? Everytime I played guns were limited to a max of 300FPS.

I usually wear a PB Jersey with some really cheap cargo pants I bought from Target. Don't really need a cup unless you play civil war.

The masks at the parks are usually crappy(ie scratched and don't have anti-fog lenses), but if you want buy one expect to pay 30+ for a decent one. Also if you get a goggle with an anti-fog lense make sure the interior doesn't scratch up easily. I use a vforce profiler. But honestly if this is your first time, just rent everything.

Also don't be tempted to buy a new marker either, just rent one at the park for your first time.

Stay safe, have fun, and DONT TAKE OFF YOUR MASK ON THE FIELD!!!!! unless you want to become a pirate.

First time I ever played was 1995. Some kid on my team took his mask off to clean it and got hit in the forhead. His entire head blew up like a mellon. Several hours later and the swelling still did not go down.

If I were him, I'd be incredibly thankful it hit the forehead instead of the eye.

Thin layers are your friend. Expect to have to buy more ammo and CO2. Rental mask and gun are OK for a first-timer, skip the rental vests or any other protective clothing they give you. Wear gloves.

Don't wear camo, face paint, or anything else that exudes douchebaggery.

Play nice and play fair.

The amount of fun you have will mostly be determined by the refs at the field. If you have bad refs don't give up on the sport. Try and go to a field with enough people that they can split the advanced players from the beginners. The rental masks usually are less comfortable than having your own but they should be cleaned by the ref crew after each day so they shouldn't be nasty. Paintball is overall a very safe sport but expect the same bruises, scrapes, and welts that you get with most extreme sports. Remember to communicate with your team during games. Constant communication is key in any effective strategy. Keep focused on moving your team forward - even if the other team is shooting at you. One daring advance is often all any team needs to secure a win.
