So I'm headed off to college in Rochester, and I'm eventually going to have to sell my car and buy some sort of truck/SUV. Right now I have a BMW Z3. What type of truck would you recommend? I was thinking a Nissan Xterra or Chevy Avalanche. Lets say there's a 30k price cap. Thanks

What do you need the truck for? I would get a Toyota Tacoma SR5. How did you get $30K anyway if you are just going to college?

selling the car I can get an easy 20 with all the crap I put in it, and RIT is giving me 20k a year. (tuition is roughly 26) With a Job, I can easily tac on a few thousand.

I have to agree with this. i went to school at RIT and my poor car was abused. The winter is really hard on the vehicles.

Yeah winter does a number on cars there. Mine's taken a beating but it's still got all it's paint haha. You'd be better off with a real SUV than any type of sedan. What college are you going to in Rochester?

Had the opportunity to drive up to rochester last year. I agree with the slacker and waggy's comments. Buy a beater or semi new beater with 8 tires. 4 winter steel tires and 4 summer "bling bling" tires. An Altima, Civic, Malibu, Rav4 will do quite nicely and front wheel drive for winter Good luck in college... and I got to say Rochester has one of the BEST HOOTER'S restaurant I've ever been in (thats saying alot )

I just moved to Rochester a month and a half ago and according to Hooters.com there is only one Hooters in the area - like 5-10 minutes from my house. I've got a few friends coming out this weekend - I'm sure they'd enjoy that.

hehe i've seen 3 series with 200k miles that just keep on going. My friend has a 95 318 with 99k and it runs great.
The one that i wanna get has 93k on it. Also my girl has 1990 318 with some 120k and it rides great too.

I've only had good experience with bmw...plus i own a 13sec turbo awd talon so mechanical work isnt a problem

Eh i don't like the Hooters in Henrietta. Buffalo Wild Wings has much better wings. BUt if you're in it for the T and A, then hooters is obviously better

I just moved here about a month and a half ago. I lived here about three years earlier through my college years. Do not get a nice car. Get something that is dependable and thats it. A nice car on any college campus is asking for trouble.

I live about 5 minutes from RIT. If you need anymore info I might be able to help you. I went to the UR.

Rochester sucked you back too.

The best place for wings in Rochester is a place called the Distillery. It's on MT Hope right across from the cemetary. They have the best wings. It's kind of nice since the banned smoking from all public places a couple weeks ago. Another place to go if you can drink is called the Old Toad. It's a British themed sort of bar. You can chips and have some Guiness. The waitresses are usually from the UK and are just in town during break. You can get some good conversations with them.

Another Rochesterian here. If Subaru vehicles interest you at all, you owe it to yourself to check them out at Van Bortel Subaru, the largest Subaru dealer in the US, located about 25 minutes away from RIT in Victor. You will not get a better deal on new subaru's than here, and they have a 102% money back guarantee on the used cars they sell (for 2 weeks or 20 days). AWD helps somewhat in the winter.

Hah, nope, Rochester didn't suck me back...I was never here to begin with! My dad got a new job, so after I graduated HS we made the 90 mile journey West on the Thruway from Syracuse. I'm heading off to college next week, so I really haven't been here long.

Thanks for the recommendations btw. I'll have to check out the Distillery. I don't quite look 21 yet though, so the Old Toad will have to wait.

I just graduated from RIT. Unless you're in one of the easy majors, or don't plan on getting any sleep, I doubt you'll make enough to kick in the extra money. Classes at RIT (in engineering at least) require more time than a full time job.

After this past winter, Jefferson was pothole city, wonderful on suspensions. They have been repaving the whole road this Summer though, so you don't lose your fillings driving on it anymore.

None of the wings in Rochester are as good as ones from back home (Niagara Falls/Buffalo area), but you are right, the Distillery's are pretty good. Buffalo Wild Wings sucks. The only thing special about their wings is all the sauces they have for them.

Oh, and Henrietta (actually all of Monroe county, I believe) has had a "no smoking in restauraunts" policy for awhile now. People were only allowed to smoke in bars, or in restauraunts if the restauraunt had the smoking section physically closed off from the non-smoking area. Though not even that is allowed now.

**Sorry about the multiple posts, had a few things to reply to. I've been here for five years, and unfortunately have to move back home at the end of the month (no job yet; part time job won't cover car payments, student loan payments, bills and rent).
