everything ive read said to keep your wallet in your front pocket or somewhere that someone cant get to easily, but that should go for any major city, imo

I've only really seen the major attractions (Colosseum, Pantheon, Trevi Fountain), plus I visited Vatican City. There are some nice parks too.

Be aware that outside of the touristy areas, Rome is pretty dirty. It is also among the worst cities for pickpocketing and petty theft. Enjoy yourself, but stay alert.

Even better is inside a man-purse that you physically hold onto when in crowded areas. I did that throughout Europe and never got jacked. Rome was one of only 2 cities where I actually saw someone get pickpocketed in front of me (Barcelona was the other).

I wish LOL. I was on a crowded subway train and when the doors opened, a figure dashed out so quickly that no one got a look at him/her. A guy a few feet from me was left patting his empty pockets and yelling "What the fuck?!".

These people are pros. Don't fuck around.

Yeah, I never got pickpocketed when I was in Italy or when I was in China. Always kept my stuff in my front pockets and kept a hand on my wallet whenever I was in a crowded place. Just being aware that pickpocketing is a common crime is enough to make you a little more alert and less vulnerable.

Rome is one of the most beautiful cities in the world; so much history, art, tradition and just..."this was the center of the worldness and it still has that aura-ness" It's just breathtaking beyond belief. I've been there twice; total of 4 days b/t the two trips. I admit I only saw the touristy areas, but I saw ALL of them twice.

As beautiful and awe-inspiring as it is, it is truly the pickpocket captial of the world. Most of the pickpockets are not some middle-aged fat dude in a black raincoat; they are CHILDREN. Be especially aware of the multi-child, tag-team pickpockets.

I had two girls run up to me outside the collesium; they were both roughly 8-9 years old. One ran up from the left, grabbed me by the wrist (and watch) and proceeded to start crying about her mother is lost and she has no money...while trying to undo the band of the watch. Meanwhile the second one snuck up behind me and had her litttle hand in my right pocket.

I grew up riding the trains in Manhattan in the 80's; I know pickpockets all too well. Aside from the welts on their arms from me smacking them, they got nothing. Watch your pockets!!!!

Other than that, keep your camera in your hands at all times; put NOTHING down on the floor, wall, fountain, etc and you'll be just fine.

Is there something FUNNY about the name Biggus Dickus!?!?!

Take lots of pictures. Do research and find out where the off-the-beaten-path restaurants are. Ogle Italian women. Take pictures and share.

Rome was my least favorite city in all of Europe. It's hot, the people are rude, it's really crowded, and the people drive like psychos. Someone tried to pickpocket us on the subway. I didn't notice at the time; were told afterwards by someone else in our group. They were really brazen, the bag was one of those messenger bags and I was wearing it in front of me with my arms over it, and he still tried.

Honestly, don't assume money is safe in your socks either. One of our tour guides had an ankle band cut off during dinner. Some guy snuck under the table and cut it off without her noticing. It was a dark crowded restaurant.

Oh and as said, children = scam. If you see ANY kids doing ANYTHING distracting, look behind you, there will be a little gypsy kid there stealing your shit.

Definitely do St. Peter's Basilica.

Be wary of the gypsies - no joke, they are some seedy ass bastards. As noted above, usually the children will be the ones working the crowd over. Definitely make sure you carry your wallet in your front pocket.

Spent a week in Rome last September for our honeymoon. It was great. Here's a few ideas and tips:

Trevi Fountain just as the sun sets. It's amazing. It's pretty crowded, but you can get some great pictures. There is also an amazing Gelato place a few side streets away. It was listed in our guidebook as the best in Rome and they were right. We had grape, and it literally tasted like grape. I can't remember the name of it though. Just be prepared for the onslaught of guys trying to sell you roses.

St Peter's and the Vatican are impressive despite their who jesusyness. Pantheon is pretty cool as well. The Colosseum was awesome to see in person.

Locals usually don't come out for supper until 8 or 9pm. If you have the time, find a nice restaurant and just do as the locals do. We sat down for a full meal (appys, 2 main courses, and 2 bottles of wine) and literally just sat and talked for 3 hours. I think when you are on vacation, you rush around to see everything and don't just take in the atmosphere of where you are. This is probably one of the best memories of our trip for me.

Transit - Rome's streets are very badly marked. I'm probably more retarded than most tourists, but it took us a long time to get a hang of the streets. Take a good map with you.

Pickpockets/Gypsies - To be honest, we didn't have any troubles at all. No one even looked at us twice and we didn't get swarmed by kids. But to be safe, just keep your money in wallet around your neck or in your front pocket.

Indulge - There are restaurants and open bars everywhere. We stopped into a bunch and had some great food and great drinks. We had an amazing salmon penne that was so good, we went back for it again the next day!

Have a great trip. Most people we dealt with were very friendly and happy to help you out.

Oh yeah, there is a great Ghosts of Rome walking tour. Our guide was great and it was a neat little view into Roman history.
