I vacationed there back in September in Mission Bay. Hated every minute of it. It was like some scummy beach community. Fun times with planes taking off over your head every 5 minutes.

I have a friend who moved to Texas last summer and she couldn't find anywhere that had decent Mexican food there. Said it's all Texmex... which just isn't the same.
No it's not. Of course, after living 5 years in Albuquerque, I knew that before I moved. Doesn't make the withdrawals any easier. We have a place that makes fish burritos ... with black beans, rice, and green chili sauce inside. =(

Phil's BBQ is overrated, and only popular in SD because of the lack of good BBQ in SD. Those coming in from anywhere that has decent BBQ should take a pass. SD has enough unique food to make up for it.

Fiesta Island is fun when you go with friends, grills, sodas (due to draconian alcohol restrictions) etc. But for visitors without that it's basically just a pile of sand surrounded by salt water.

Better choices are visiting the lighthouse on Point Loma (really great views), Ocean Beach Pier tidepools, and La Jolla cove for the seals.

Oh, and a Hornblower dinner cruise if you have(can find) a date, really nice views on the harbor after dark.

This and a california burrito, because SD is the only place where those are made right.

My recommendation is El Azteca in La Mesa, but if you're in La Jolla, Don Carlos is good.
In the airport we met a girl who claimed to be the reigning Miss La Jolla. She didn't have a crown on so I am not sure.

from here
La Jolla Cove - walking around there, and lots of restaurants too.
Downtown / Gaslamp quarter is awesome. Tons of bars and restaurants.
Seaport Village - downtown on the bay is nice, kinda touristy.
Midway Aircraft Carrier museum - Very cool, down a mile from Seaport Village
Cruise around the bay. all the charters are around down by the Midway.
And of course the Zoo / Sea World / LegoLand. Try the Safari Park, it's part of the Zoo.
Old Town is great for some Mexican culture and great mex food.

The Brigantine does have great fish tacos, but IMHO the best are at South Beach Bar and Grill in OB at the end of Newport Ave. They also have a great selection of beers, and represent San Diego's amazing beer market quite well. Also, Hodad's hamburger joint is right there, one of the best burgers around.
That's another thing you could do, go beer tasting!
Stone, Ballast Point, Port Brewing/Lost Abbey, Green Flash, Alesmith, Karl Strauss, etc...
Ballast Point just opened their new brewery/HQ in Miramar, it's amazing.
