Going to San Francisco - Suggestions

Last Friday I got in on the Southwest deal and got roundtrip tickets to San Francisco for super cheap. We will be flying in on October 31 and leaving November 6.

Our flight won't be in until 9:20 PM. The wife and I are into the craft beer scene and will be stopping by Russian River, Lagunitas, and Bear Republic at minimum. One thought was to get a rental car and do the beer and wine country the first couple of days. The other option would be to catch the BART to a hotel in Downtown in the Union Square East or Embarcadero area.

Everything I have read is parking is terrible in the city. Parking is high and some days I might not even need the car. If we do beer/wine country first, we could maybe check-in to a hotel in the city and return the car. I'd like to have the car to explorer some of the scenic areas though.

Anyone have any suggestions? ie. where to stay and what areas to avoid, places to see, tips for commuting, etc...

Any of the major hotels in the Union Square or Embarcadero areas will be fine. I usually prefer to stay a little bit away from the tourist madness of Market St. though.

Check out the Ferry Building, the Westfield San Francisco Center (good mall), China Town, and the Golden Gate Bridge.

Avoid Mid-market/Tenderloin/Western Addition

Any other suggestions?

Wife and I got married there last year around that time.

We did Chinatown, Japantown (skippable we just did it since we had time to kill before doing paper work at city hall), drove down to Monterey, did the ferry building farmer's market, went across the golden gate bridge, went to some food truck gathering near I think Marina, did Fisherman's wharf (it is super over the top touristy so easily skippable), walk around City Hall (it is a nice looking building...). Took the waterfront streetcars and the trolley. Wife was a little sick so we did less than we wanted to, plus there was the whole getting married thing. We're kind of foodies so that's why we did the food truck and farmer's market.

Beyond that there's coit tower, that big park with the museums, twin peaks, alcatraz and lots of restaurants that I'm sure local folks would be better at recommending.

The only thing I remember hearing is stay away from the tenderloin.

Depends on what kind of stuff you're into, but here's a few suggestions based on my experiences...

If you're going to use public transit, or see more than a couple attractions that it includes, get a CityPass. It includes a week of rides on the muni (city bus) and cable cars, as well as admission to 5 common attractions. If you're not visiting any of the attractions, then maybe seek out a muni pass.

As far as attractions, if you're into science, definitely check out the CA Academy of Sciences - it's directly across from the deYoung musem (art) and very close to the botanical gardens, if those interest you. The Cable Car museum is free and interesting if you're into history or engineering. IMO, some of the best views of the city are from Coit Tower (free to visit but you pay to go up to the very top) and Vista Point (across the Golden Gate from downtown). I liked the Ferry Building (basically an indoor farmers market with a twice weekly outdoor one as well). Of course, the Golden Gate is a fun walk - just catch a bus to the Presidio area and it stops at the visitor center.

I found that just stopping in and inquiring about a rental car got me a great rate, though my rental was only one day.

If you head north, of course, there's wine country. If you like nature, there's also Marin Headlands and Muir Woods (closest place to SF you can find redwoods) within 20 minutes from downtown. You can follow highway 1 up the coast. Fun to drive and incredible views, especially if there's no fog. Up that way there's a lot of great hiking and vistas, including Mt. Tamalpais State Park and Point Reyes National Seashore.

I can't speak to accomodations in Union Square or the Embarcadero. I have stayed in North Beach and did like the area. It was closer to most of what we did and to everything except perhaps BART (which you'll likely only use to get to and leave town). While closer to the embarcadero, it's a few blocks back from the wharf area (very touristy) but still easily walkable to food, safe at night and some places there include parking for free.

Food - obviously there's way too much good food to mention, but you can likely find anything you're looking for.

Agreed, go to Twin Peaks for the best view of SF. Panorama photo I took mid May 2010.

the W hotel in SF near union square is in a good location in the middle of everything
The bar in that hotel is also pretty nice which is worth checking out for a drink

Muir Woods is definitely worth a visit. Bring a jacket.

Whenever anyone comes to visit us, this is our standard checklist of things to do and places to eat:

Alcatraz -- make sure you buy tickets about 4-6 weeks early, because they pretty much always sell out, year round.

Pier 39 -- this can be combined with Alcatraz, basically you walk around and buy some overpriced food and pay for really overpriced parking, doesn't take that long at all. I think in October the sea lions are there, they're cool. You also get really good views of Alcatraz from the end of the pier. Things to avoid around the Pier: the wax museum, totally not worth it.

Golden Gate Bridge -- You go, you get your picture taken in front of it, you maybe walk across it, it's pretty easy to park your car around the bridge, I have no idea how to get there using public transportation though.

Lombard Street -- You go, you get your picture taken in front of it, you maybe walk up and/or down it, if you have a car you should definitely drive down it. I honestly have no idea why anyone would want to live on, or near, this street since there are always tons of people around.

Muir Woods -- Really big trees, totally worth it. It can get really crowded (I mean you have to park 1-3 miles away crowded) on weekends and in the summer.

China Town -- Pretty much all the stores sell the same crap, but everyone has to go at least once, we've always just chosen a restaurant at random while there and I don't think any of them have ever been bad (except for service, that almost always sucks).

Golden Gate park -- I really like the Japanese gardens, it only takes an hour or two to walk through and it's really tranquil, there are also tons of other things to do in the park, and you can drive to the west end and end up at Ocean beach, which is quite a nice big beach.

Trolley car -- The most expensive public transportation in SF, we usually jumped on around China town but the ride is really short from China Town to the end of the line so I would find a different place to jump on and milk it for all it's worth since tickets are like $5-8 and I don't think it matters where you jump on, everyone pays the same price (it's been a while since we've taken anyone on the Trolley cars).

Food recommendations:

The Stinking Rose -- Everything is made from/with Garlic, even the ice cream. This place is touristy, but the food is pretty good. I really like the prime rib, and the short rib is good also. Not close to Bart, kind of close to Pier 39 if you have a car.

Umami Burger - They sell artisan hamburgers, if you like hamburgers, chances are you'll like them. Not close to Bart.

Taqueria Cancun -- This is without a doubt my absolute favorite Mexican restaurant in SF, I usually get an assortment of super tacos, people that get the burritos like them also. You can get here from 24th or 16th st Bart.

Soma Street Food Park -- Something for everyone at lunch, kind of dead during dinner (less people, less food trucks) on the weekdays, though I've heard dinner on the weekends is alright. 20 minute walk from 16th st Bart.

Ike's Place sandwiches -- good sandwiches, it's semi-close to Dolores park, so you can grab a sandwich and walk the 3-4 blocks to the park to eat it. 20 minute walk from 16th st Bart in a different direction than Soma Street Food

Phat Philly -- I really like the California cheese steak from here. Easy 5 minute walk from 24th st Bart.

Things we haven't been able to find:

A really good seafood restaurant, all the ones we've tried haven't been that great. The ones around Pier 39 are overpriced and I've never been blown away by the food.

Have you tried any of these?

My chowhound googlefu says:

Tadich Grill
Sotto Mare for cioppino.
Italian restaurants in San Francisco that specialize in seafood include Brindisi, La Ciccia, Pesce, Rose Pistola and Sotto Mare.
For very plain, fresh local crab, go to Swan's Oyster Depot on Polk Street and California.
Tomales Bay Oyster Co
Fish (350 Harbor Dr, Sausalito, CA 94965)

Oh man, some of these I had never heard of, they have now been added to our list, thanks for the recommendations.

You mean the cable car? If you buy a CityPass, cable car is included along with muni (both buses and the actual trolleys/streetcars, which what are travel up and down the Embarcadero).

Yeah, whatever is on the Rice-A-Roni box

That's a good tip about the CityPass, we've never even thought to look at them because we live in the area and have a car, but I'll remember that for next time.

We've never been up to Napa so I'm not sure when the best time to go is.

A general rule of thumb (or joke) we use for California is: if you want to do something, a thousand other people want to do it also, and at the exact time you want to do it. So you're probably sixes either way

I was looking in the Union Square East and Finanical District - Embarcadero area.

Union Square West is cheaper on Hotwire and Priceline? Should it be avoided?
