going to tokyo in a month

just bought tickets to Tokyo out of the blue and will be going there in about a months time. I speak no Japanese and have not booked any hotels/car rentals.

Plan on climbing Mt. Fuji while I'm there. Anyone been there and can recommend some other fun stuff or info on accommodations/night clubs while i'm there?

I can't wait to go!!

I live in Tokyo but I'm travelling in China until Aug. 20th

There's a ton of things to do in and around Tokyo, but like everwhere in Japan; it's expensive.

You will be hitting the tail end of the Mt. Fuji climbing season so I would go as soon as your jet lag wears off. How long are you staying?

All the night clubs I liked got closed down *sad face*

I would go see the usual shrines and such that you will find in any tour guide book.

Are you only going to stick in Tokyo only? If not I would deff look into making a trip to some Onsens or go down to Osaka as they are totally different places and atmosphere.

I would check out the Edo Tokyo Museum...Some pretty good historical stuff and excellent models.

Go to Harajuku...big shopping street, huge beutiful park, some famous architecture has been done there....this is where the term Harajuku Girl came from...Gwen Steffani and here stupid songs..

I dunno...I just like walking around the city..just a fun place...as you are on Anandtech, I would deff recommend you take a stroll through Akihabara which is the electronic/nerd/gaming/porn/freaky japanese maid fetish place.

I am actively looking for a teaching job there :/

we are staying for a week only. I would have loved to check out the worlds largest waterpark, however it is in southern japan and would require another flight down there. I will definitely check out the shrines and architecture. I would love to watch an authentic sumo wrestling match as well.

The mountain climb will probably be the highlight of the trip though. I would like to find a decent group/guide to go with.

If your only staying for one week, check out http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e3008.html for Odaiba. Go to Tsukiji fishmarket but go early. They close two days of the month so check it out before you go. You can also check out the big budda at Kamakura(you can also go surfing if that interest you near there).

Also check out the Ghibli museum in Mitaka station if your a totoro/anime fan. Its located about 30-45 minutes from Shinjuku station. I took my family there a few years ago and we had a blast.

If you like ramen, check out the Ramen museum located in Shin-Yokohoma.

The weather should be hot and humid(I believe its the tail end of the rainy season in Japan right now) so dress accordingly.

Try to participate in a tea ceremony if you can.

I have taken my daughters twice in the past four years and they still ask me to take them back again.

You really don't need a guide to get up Mt. Fuji. In the popular season its pretty crowded and I am sure you will meet some people on your way up.

If Sumo is in season..deff go.
