I'll be heading to ZRH this week for work, Mon-Thurs, then taking Fri & Sat to do some stuff on my own. I'll be staying right near the airport because I'll be working there, and because of the discount, decided to stay there on my days off. I won't have a car but I understand the transit is very good.

Does anyone have any recommendations on food, sights, and possibly skiing? This was kind of a last minute thing, so I didn't get a chance to do much research. For skiing, I've heard Flumserberg is easily accessible from the city, but thats about it. I'll also have to rent everything since I won't have any winter gear with me, but I assume most places should have all that available.

I spent some time in the western, French part of Switzerland (Laussane), so I can't really help you out there. IIRC, it'd be a trip to git to the Ski areas. But if you cna make it, check out Interlakken or Grindelvald. In Grindelvald, you can scale the side of a ginormous glacier with an attached ladder.

Switzerland is small, so day trips by train back and forth should be extremely easy.

Definately check out Bahnhofstrasse for great shopping and general walk around. Be sure to stop off at Sprungli on the same street for some Swiss Coffee and Swiss chocolates- it doesn't get any better. Man, I miss Switzerland. I need a job which takes me to Zurich every now and then.

You should probably get that compass fixed.

I actually stopped through Lucerne about 10 years ago, when I was young, and bought a swiss military watch for about $100. The thing has been a beast. Other than one battery change a few years back, I couldn't have asked for more.

I think Einstein studied there. There might be a museum dedicated to his studies.

Here are some skiing recommendations. Renting should be no problem and if you don't want to bother with renting ski equipment, you could also rent a sledge and try a sledging route.

Food: Raclette, Fondue, Zürcher Geschnetzeltes, Röschti, the Italian kind of pizza...
If you want some restaurant recommendations, you can try the forum linked above or specify your interests here and I'll try to help.

Trips: Same here. Regarding Zurich the minimal program is to walk down both sides of the river between the main station and the lake. But there are many worthwile destinations at your fingertips in Kloten, for example you could go to Einsiedeln and take a look at the monastery and winter landscape there...

Do what I did when I was there in 1995 ... rode the buses for free, and slept under bushes for two nights to save some of my travelling money before I hitched out of town I remember being impressed by the place, but horrified by the prices.

I'm late to this thread, hope you enjoyed your stay so far. Restaurant prices are a bit on the high side in ski resorts, I hope you treat yourself with a nice dinner, too!

Skiing was fantastic. It was just a day trip so I only had a snack at the slopes, but it was expensive. I had dinner back in Zurich at Zeughauskeller on some recommendations. The meal was good and the atmosphere was really cool, plus I sat at a large table so I got to talk to others (which is always nice, eating by yourself isn't fun).

Trying to figure out how to spend my last day, tomorrow. I'm weighing a day trip to Lucerne or just bumming around Zurich a bit longer and sight seeing.
