Anyone using a Golden Orb to cool a pelter?
I'd like to know if this has been tried/done.
The install I have in mind will put the heatsink out of the case if that matters. My desire to use these is for looks and sound level. I don't however want to invest in a couple of them if they won't cut it. The pelter size I'd like to use is 52watts,maybe 72watts max. Any opinions are welcome.

Never tried it, but from people I have seen that have, the Orb is not sufficent. Especially not with a 72w pelt.

I'm with BuddyHolly, the Golden Orbs just cant disappate the heat of a cpu AND a peltier. You need an alpha or something of that size to deal with a peltier.

The heatsink will only be handling the pelters heat, not both cpu and pelter. The pelters will be cooling fluid in water blocks passed through a trany cooler at the case front via pump. A 120mm fan at the case front interior will suck cooled air into the case through the tranny cooler. the pelters, water blocks and heatsinks are to be located at the top rear of the k188 antec full tower. Heatsinks are just outside the case.
The reason for not wanting to cool the pelters with water is two fold right now. 1)economics; extra pump,radiator/fans. 2)space; I'm trying to fit this all inside the case.
If the TEC's can be cooled effectively with forced air outside the case,I'd rather do that. I just need the right solution for a heatsink/fan combo.
Thanks guy's!

Ive been trying to rig up something like this myself. Without all of the fancy dancy water cooling. Im having a hard time coming up with some way to fit the peltier and the 1/4" thick cold plate under the orb.
My idea is to have a temp controller(borrowed from work hehe) to keep the cold plate at a set temp. Something around 20c. Ill see how cool that keeps the cpu. The controller will pulse a relay to toggle the peltier on and off. I think this will work well. First im going to try 5v on the peltier, and then maybe ill try using 12v on the pelt.
Anyone have any suggestions on holding it all together besides using a big zip tie?

there's a way to bend a paper clip so that you can extend the golden orb's retetion system.
i heard that the orb doesn't have enough surface area to cool a peltier...that and that the golden orbs don't cut it.

I Bought 2 orbs to cool down 2 72W peltiers. Was not worth it. The orbs are not good coolers. That is why they are cheap. With each orb for each 72W peltier, the heatsink on the orb got really got. It was hot to the touch. The cold side was only about 2-3C below ambient temp. It was a wasted effort. I had to sell the orbs back for cheap ($14 a pop shipped instead of the $20 each shipped I bought it for). Oh well...
May be it will be good for a 20W peltier

Ok,so which of the alpha's available have the best price perfomance/ratio cooling 52-68watt TEC's? Are there places that sell "heatsinks only"? Even though the cooler will not be mounted on the cpu,the size I'd like is fc-ppga.
Thanks for the info so far fellas!

Thanks for the heads up BuddyHolly. I was looking there stuff over the other day and the FDP32's look good especially @ $16.00.
Then I noticed the FLK38's. Ya a sawbuck more each but these look like they would have absolutely no problems with TEC's even @ 78watts.
What do you think?
