I'm getting into golf these days. I've been using "hand me downs" from friends, I think I want to purchase irons, woods, pw, sw and bag...

I know that I should try the clubs before buying them but I figured reading reviews online would be a great primer for me.

I've found couple sites but they don't seem to have too much traffic. You know, more reviews the better they are.

Can you guys refer me to some sites?

Thanks.

Have you checked out golfdigest.com?

I've never been there myself, it's just the first site I thought of.

If you are wanting to look at high end items, you want to checkout this site..

WRXGOLF

They mostly talk about latest clubs.
If you read the forum, they mostly talk about tour issued items.

Check the work out of the USGA. Matt Pringel's lab does the testing of all the clubs and balls. They have any data you would want to ever know on a club. Find some that look good and then find people that use them and see what they think.

Having nice equipment? There is a reason why 95% of the tour plays with Titlist. Have fun with your forum.

You're an idiot. 95%??? ROFLMAO!!!

OP, this highlights the problem of getting good golf gear reviews online. You either have commercial sites like GolfDigest that are hawking the products of their major advertisers or you have major morons like SphinxnihpS that are offering up falsehoods so monumentally stupid that it's truly a sight to behold.

It's pretty hard to get good golf reviews because most people have some sort of agenda. Even if they're not being paid to give good reviews they're still not going to be open minded. Everyone has a favorite brand and will tend to go into reviews with the preconception that their favorite brand will be the best. The simple truth is that there are no magic bullets and no company has a technological edge over another. Titleist is about the same as Taylormade which is about the same as Nike which is about the same as Callaway which is about the same as Cleveland etc etc etc.

You should not be interested in what tour players use because their game is very unlike your game and they're being paid to play certain clubs. What's #1 on tour in NEVER about quality, it's all about which companies are paying the most to buy the most players. Period. But if you're interested here's the top 10 in the world and the clubs they're contracted to play.

Tiger - Nike
Phil - Callaway
Vijay - Cleveland
Padraig - Wilson
Sergio - Taylormade
Kim - Nike
Villegas - Cobra
Robert Karlsson - Titleist
Els - Callaway
Henrik Stenson - Srixon

8 brands in the top 10. If any brand was truly better their players would dominate the rankings. They don't. It's all pretty much the same with different cosmetics. What's important with gear isn't which pro plays it or what sort of review it gets. All that matters is how is fits YOUR GAME. A $10 no-name club that fits will outperform a $1000 big name club that doesn't. It's that simple. You might be able to use reviews to get a general idea of certain brands and to narrow it down to a few different options that seem to fit your game and your budget. But beyond that it's all up to you. Go out and demo everything. Get fit. Get on a launch monitor. Get a few sets out onto the course and test them in the real world. That's the only way to get something that will work properly for you. If you rely too much on online reviews you're going to wind up getting braindead advice from halfwits like SphinxnihpS and you'll be doomed.

Not sure about specific product reviews, but Golfsmith.com has an 'Expert Advice' section that has a lot of general pointer, like how to pick the right clubs for you, etc. that may be worth a gander.

I third the recommendation of Golfwrx. I've learned tons of stuff there about golf gear, and golf in general.

hyperbole?

It is a high percentage. The top golfers are all sponsored and will use the equipment of the company that buy them the most blowjobs. On top of that, none of them use stock equipment the average Joe could buy, so you can go out and buy all the Nike you want, but it won't be the same as the stuff Tiger has in his bag (the same is true of Titleist).

You advice about what fits "your" game is junk. There quite simply is such a thing as better equipment than the rest, and MOST ALL of the equipment out there is garbage made to make the bad player make better "feeling" shots, even when they hit the ball incorrectly (thus reinforcing bad habits).

Personally I think the best clubs ever made are still the old PGA muscle-back blades and R90 and R91 wedges, but you can't buy those any more. Too bad so sad.

If you just want to be average and want you clubs to be "forgiving" get Pings or Callaways or some other garbage cavity back clubs. If you want you clubs to actually help you improve your game, get Titleist or at least blades.

lol... halfwit ROFL!

You're right, halfwit is giving you WAY too much credit. Every time you post anything on this subject your intelligence rating drops. Right now it's hovering around tenth-wit and one more inane post and you'll be all the way down to a "retarded cabbage". You are without a doubt the most ignorant wannabe golfer I have ever seen online and that it a remarkable achievement given the high level of competition. You have not managed to spew forth a single truth. I would have guessed that you might have done it just by accident by typo-ing something stupid into something smart. But nope, your record is perfect. Every word is wrong.

you know, i usually don't agree with gaghalfgrunt or whatever his name is, i just usually ignore his posts as it's mostly annoying golf elitism and i figure he just needs to get off the golf course and get laid, but in this case i have to make an exception and wholeheartedly agree with him.

I'm a big fan of Golfsmith. I'm fortunate enough to have one of their B&M stores close to my house and they probably get about 50% of my business.

I'm definitely no pro or expert, but I'd like to think I know a thing or two about the game after practicing/playing for 13 years. When it comes to choosing a club, you really need to test them out for yourself: what feels great for one person may be absolutely horrible for you. I've gone through quite a few clubs/brands and although I'm partial to a few brands (TaylorMade & Callaway), I wouldn't say they're the best by any stretch.

I think the best advice I was given was by my Dad, who told me to find a few clubs that got favorable reviews and also find a few that you think personally sound good. Pull the 6 iron out and take practice swings with 'em. If you're lucky enough to have a small range built into the store (like Golfsmith), then take some actual shots. See how it feels and if it's comfortable for you.

Also...if you can buy used sets, I definitely recommend that as well. You'll save yourself some dough and you're still getting a good club!

Along with some new (or at least new to you) clubs, you may want to think about getting some lessons. I took a handful of lessons when I started to really want to play the game and it helped me tremendously! Even a Medicus isn't a terrible investment...as gimmicky as it sounds (again, I'd try and find one used if possible).

So...I've pretty much gone against everything that SphinxnihpS said, but I figured I would try and give you some real advice instead of just saying OMFGTITLEISTISTEHBEST!! ESPECIALLY when he can't even spell the name of the manufacturer correctly!
