Entertaining, but this freaky little creature is the Jar Jar Binks of LOTR. He talks funny, has a weird voice and he's damn ugly. Don't you agree?

No. He talks funny, has a weird voice and is damn ugly because he's supposed to be.

You know when I first read the hobbit over 30 years ago my conception was that of a much more animalist being, but after reading that Gollum was at one time human and had been twisted into the beast that he is, these pictures are more along the lines with what I would have imagined.

I do think Jar-Jar's animation was more seemless in Star Wars than Gollum's is in LOTR.

what? didnt you see the scene where Gollum was splashing in the water trying to catch a fish? never has a scene putting a cg character into the real world been done so well before

Gollum rocked. The scene where he was talking to himself for a while was GREAT. Very hilariously done.

That was good.
But, I have seen TTT 3 times, and PM and ATOTC about 10 times each.
I really want Gollum's animation to be better, but honestly I have to say that for single characters like Gollum and Jar-Jar, ILM is slightly better.

That's not what I'm talking about. I'm just pointing out the similarities in the characters.

If there is any similarity then we know where Lucas got it from...

Whatever, you're crazy, they did a fantastic job. I agree with most here, the smoothness of the animation, and the reactions to physics were amazing, the best yet. Plus they managed to show the pitiful nature of 'poor old Smeagol'. In the book I always thought of him as evil and dark, and never understood why Frodo would feel sorry for him, but when hes all curled up in a ball after being captured by Gondorians, and hes sobbing away and talking to himself, man, sent chills up my spine. "ooohh master betrayed us". Creepy.

I can also honestly say that I have never, in all the theatre sittings of the two recent Star Wars films, seen an audience react to a CG character with the same degree of emotion as they would a real actor. Not in Star Wars or Final Fantasy did I hear gasps or sighs with regards to the graphics. If ever there was a fair chance for a CG character to be put up for an Oscar for acting, this is the one.

Jar-Jar binks was a gimmick, included to get a few laughs from the under 5s... I thought the glimpses of gollum in FOTR (i havn't seen TTT yet) were startlingly good and well animated.

Gollum was the first time i ever let my brain trick me into thinking it was a real. a couple of times i just thought of him as a real creature because he was fluid and had a lot of emotion.

to compare him to that douche bag jar jar binks is an insult to LotR

There are a few reasons for this. 1. The new Star Wars movies had huge numbers of CG environments so more often than not Jar-Jar was probably<sp?> on a "digital" set and didn't have to be composited into "the real world". 2. Jar-Jar, compared to Gollum, was a very physically static character. 3. Jar-Jar had clothes covering everything but his head and arms (and feet?) but Gollum was butt naked save for a loin cloth. Compared to skin (especailly around the joints) clothing is easy for CG animators to handle. 4. Jar-Jar has a very alien face and body which made us less critical in judging his physical form. Gollum, on the other hand, had a much more human face and body which means people, knowling or not, were much more critial when watching Gollum.

Gollum is the new standard for human-esque CG characters.
