AFAIK, this is the 1TB Seagate with the firmware issue. There's a reason it's cheap.

1TB doesn't have the firmware issue. That was the first batch of 1.5TB HDDs.

This drive is a 7200RPM drive, so the downside is that most of these are going into archiving and backup use (including ours). So they run very hot for a HDD that could have been better replaced by a 5400RPM Green drive.

Yeah, ours has been running 24/7 in our server for about 4-5 months now. Only issue as I said is they're really hot and not too quiet. If you're going to be doing file archiving, there's many deals netting the 5400RPM Green drives for around the same price. Though granted this is certainly a hot deal with a better price/performance ratio.

Actually all the 7200.11s had the firmware issue.

It was some issue where it only had a certain number of entries for a log in the firmware controller. when it ran out it would freeze up instead of freeing up some spots.

They fixed it though and most new drives have the new firmware already.

I have had my 1.5 TB 7200.11 for 4-5 months now and its fine (I bought it during the "Scare" on newegg refurb for like $88 because people were returning them en masse!)

It is a very quiet drive. I would say almost as quiet as my samsung spinpoint f1 i had before it.

1TB had the firmware issue too, as did the 500gb drives.

That has been resolved though, any new Seagate drive you buy has the updated firmware.

Is updating the firmware on affected drives a necessity?
