Hi Guys,

This is my first post here, I need your opinion on these parts.

OS: Windows XP Professional

Processor: Intel Pentium 4 3.2 GHz

PSU: Enermax EG465P-VE(FC) 450W

Motherboard: Asus P4C800-E Deluxe (Chipset Intel 875P)

RAM: Corsair 512MB TWINX-3200LL (400MHz) DDR RAM (Quantiyx2 RAM sticks, 1024MB)

Hard Drive: Seagate 120GB Hard drive(8MB cache)

DVD-RW Drive: Plextor PX-712SA (internal)

Floppy Drive: Sony 3.5" Floppy (internal)

Video Card: ATI Radeon 9800XT

Modem: U.S. Robotics 56k Modem (internal)

Case: Antec Sonata

This PC is gonna last for another like, 10 years so im getting the best parts so it'll last for a looong time. Are there any changes to make or is this just the best you can get it?

Also, are there any parts im missing? like any PSI cards or something

Thanks,

Shak

Looks like a good setup to me except I would take out the modem and replace it with a 10/100 NIC. And sorry to break it to you but there's no way that's going to last 10 years.

PorBleemo: The mobo has Gigabyte LAN onboard

high: I DO have a GB of ram, notice I put "2 sticks of 512"

Wait for the x800? Hmm...Im not sure if i can wait that long (end of this month then another couple of weeks for it to reach my country) cuz my computer is badly in need of replacement. Maybe I can hook up a deal with the part distributor to take back my 9800 and give me an x800

Whats the difference in price and features of the two? I mean, it wouldnt be that much of a difference would it?

Nobody has told me yet what a price for the whole thing would cost

I would just like an estimate.

Keep em coming!

Have you been like sleeping for the last 2 weeks or so: "Whats the difference in price and features of the two? I mean, it wouldnt be that much of a difference would it?"
... no offence bro, but there's HUGE difference between the 9800 series and the X800....read some reviews first, including the one Anand's.

Well, where you live, I guess getting the new stuff is pretty hard, but if I wanted my system to last a LONG time, I would NOT go with that setup.
Instead, I would wait a 2 months and get:

Socket 939 Athlon 64 system (64 bit, so you'll be set for future, also has Dual Channel + PCi-express)
PSU: whatever
MOBO: upcoming VIA, will support PCI-express, AGP, and PCI
GPU: Radeon X800XT or Geforce 6800GT.
Everything else, same as you listed.

It depends on how much money you want to spend I guess. If you can't find places locally, buy online Ebay or something. Guaranteed better prices anyway.

Pretty expensive system that will be outdated in a few months. Spending a fortune on RAM and processor right now is not a good idea.....RAM prices are sky high ($290 for the setup you want) and that processor price (3.2ghz) is pretty steep as well ($270). If you want to stick with Intel, I would suggest a 2.8C ($170), along with some PC4000 RAM. The 2.8C overclocks better than 3.2's (2.8 @ ~3.5 / 3.2 @ ~3.7). And if you are planning on overclocking, then you might look into PC4000 RAM......instead of buying one of the most expensive PC3200 modules made.

Good choice on PSU though! Also, if you are planning on spending $$$$$.....go with the Abit IC7-Max3....best 875 chipset board made

if it's going to last 5 years here's what i'd do...

lose the floppy (already on their way out)
lose the dial-up unless you use it
get a usb key
get something 64bit (cough*A64*cough)
get gigabit ethernet

just my general opinions of the future

LMAO!

I don't mean to laugh (well, yes I do), but who the hell still uses any computer from 1994? I understand the desire to build something that will last, but you have to realize that whatever you buy will be woefully obsolete within 2 years. Hell, obsolete within six months!

Thats a little extreme If you aren't into hardcore gaming that 2100+/2.0Ghz P4 was great....even nearly 3 years ago that 1800+ is still pulling it well. Even many games like CS and Warcraft and other popular titles the system run just fine w/o nary a problem

But yeah...10 years isn't going to mean anything...1994...lol was pentium even out? I didn't get into hardware till 1998 so I can't say

But i think if you build a top of the line system, it should hold out for gaming for about 2 years before it begins to show its age...and even then you should be fine for quite a long time with games on medium details and perfect for any other thing...I know people with 1900+s and ti4600s who are playing many new games just as contently, albiet not on the highest resolutions out there.

Then again if you HAVE to run games on full detail at the highest resolutions....well there is no hope for yo u

So the X800 is a much better improvement over the 9800XT. I hear that the x800 PRO is already shipping and the XT version will be out this month? How about I just get an x800 PRO now (where is it being sold ?)

I sort of exaggerated the 10 years bit. Right now im using a 6 year old comp thats got 600Mhz and 128MB ram, so i'll probably be using this new system for about 3 years then i'll have my own notebook (off to university) and i'll leave my pop to use MS Word and check his email

I dont want to change processors, 1GB of RAM is more then enough and will probably be standard for the next year.

I dont even think i'll be overclocking, so im gonna stick with the 3.2Ghz.

The PSU is also expensive (close to $100). Does anyone know any silvery shiny cases that have 450+W PSUs with them? I dont want to buy a seperate one.

The dialup I am gonna use for probably the next six months. The floppy i'll keep (why through out? its only $10 ). I have a 256MB USB Key, the Asus motherboard has onboard Gigabyte LAN (I wrote that above, read please) and I think im fine with 32bit (even if it can only support upto 2GB RAM).

Hehe Astaroth33, not from 1194, from 1998 I'll probably keep this computer for the next 20 years as a memory and get a notebook for myself.

I would like your input on a good case (silver) that has a 450W+ PSU.

Heres the price list from newegg.com so far:

Processor: Intel Pentium 4 3.2 GHz - $280
Motherboard: Asus P4C800-E Deluxe (Chipset Intel 875P) - $188
RAM: Corsair 512MB TWINX-3200LL (400MHz) DDR RAM (2 Sticks) - $198
Hard Drive: Seagate 120GB Hard drive(8MB cache) - $100
DVD-RW Drive: Plextor PX-712SA (internal) - $190
Floppy Drive: Sony 3.5" Floppy (internal) - $10
Video Card: ATI Radeon 9800XT - $400
Modem: U.S. Robotics 56k Modem (internal) - $20

Thanks for the suggestions!

Just need a case now

Antec Sonata, Lian Li PC6070. One of them has a silver option, i think.

If your going to spend the money, its senseless getting an outdated piece of technology like the Pentium 4. Any Athlon 64 seriously kicks its ass, and its like... same price/less expensive.

But yea, heres what I still don't get. WHEN are you getting this system. like TOMORROW? Or in a month? If in month, definately get an Athlon 64 system, it will beat the Pentium 4 in Price, performance, AND lasting value. WHY don't you want to chagne processors? (Unless you already bought the mobo)

Hmm...i'll check out the case.

Well...i've been using Intel all my life and im a bit of an Intel lover.

Im gonna be getting this PC next week, cuz this comp is really starting to rust (crashing, internet falling off etc.)

What are my options now agaisnt Intel? If I was to drop Intel now, What AMD machine should I get (something that is the same standard of this Intel Processor) and what motherboard with the same features as this Asus (it seems like a VERY good motherboard). Im looking for something really speedy (like I said, at the standard of this Intel).

About the video card, the x800 Pro is on sale. Should I get that or stick with the 9800XT? I wont be able to wait for the x800 XT. Another thing I dont understand is that the 9800XT is more expensive then the x800 Pro....which should I get??

The great thing with building your own machine is that you can upgrade it and add bits in time. A little extra RAM in a few years, another hard drive, a newer graphics card... that's what it's all about.

The people who say "..will last me 10 years" usually buy a Dell, never open the case and chuck it away after 7 years (ab)use.

You're building a nice sysytem. Build it with care and love and treat it to an upgrade in time.

If you are still using that 56K modem in 2014 post back and I'll send you some money to buy something better!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have recently built a P4 3.0Ghz in a Sonata case with a P4C800-E Deluxe mobo and 512Mb Corsair TwinX 466Mhz (PC3700). The RAM was a good buy - cheaper than PC3200 and worth it when I overclock (haven't yet). I intend to add another 1Gb in time - but 512Mb is fine for now and RAM prices will reduce in time.

I'm currently using a stock Intel Cooler. Looking at going for Water Cooling as the beast is a little noisy - even in the Sonata case.

As for graphics - I wouldn't go for the new X800 Pro yet. Buy a 9600 and in 12 months time you will be able to buy a X800 Pro for LESS than your two cards put together (plus you get a spare or card for 2nd machine). Don't buy the latest kit unless you really don't plan on upgrading for 10 years.

BTW - the Antec Sonata comes with a decent TruePower 380Watt PSU. A decent case, well built, good value for money (esp as incl PSU) but a little over-rated - I got quite excited reading the reviews but at the end of the day it's just a case (fairly small as well).

Good luck as well!

errr if you can wait a couple more weeks the x800 and GeForce 6800U are consistently DOUBLE the performance of Radeon 9800Pro's and XT's. That's a HUGE jump. Also, even if you don't want to get those processors, waiting a month or so will get you a 50-100 dollar reduction on the price of that 9800XT.
Err, as far as 64-bit is concerned, if price isn't a concern, then go with the Athlon 64 FX-53 (3400+) and buy a pair of registered PC-3200 memory. If you want absolute best...that's it. Beats just about any intel offering (errr....unless you overclock your P4 REALLY high). It supports dual channel memory, runs much cooler than the P4 extreme edition and the new Prescott's and is extremely stable. If price IS a concern then I suggest the regular Athlon64 3200+ or 3400+. It only supports single channel memory but, they can get regular (non-registered), cheaper memory and the performance is very close to the FX-53. I'll leave you to find the motherboard of your choice but if you want bleeding edge performance that'll last you a couple years, then there you go.

All right, the FX-53 is not exactly cheap....damn expensive.

Could you point me a direct link on newegg for the one your talking about (Athlon 64 FX-53 (3400+) ). There are a couple so pointing to the specific one will be helpful. About the RAM, the current memory I am using is PC-3200 memory but its said to be "unbuffered" (I dont even know the difference between registered/unbuffered).

And I dont really know which mobo to buy, could you guys pick a rock hard one that would work great with an FX-53?

value for dollar, I'd get:

a64 3000+
MSI K8T Neo
and a 9800 Pro or XT

The money you save now can be used for an upgrade/update between now and whenever you plan to start over and build a new machine again
