In that case, you should sail to San Diego where you won't die in the winter.

How far can you go in a 32' boat if you disregard "best practices"? Could you cross the Atlantic in something like that with a reasonable chance of success?

I'm not really doing this to save money. It'd be a nice extra. I'm more doing it for:

* the adventure
* the fact that I love water
* I want to sail.
* I like being weird.

Save yourself alot of pain, stay where you are at and just buy a water bed, fan, and a pirate hat. That will fufill your list and save you the grief.

If by reasonable you mean "non-zero" then yeah, probably. Actually, that teen that just sailed around the world apparently did it on a 34' boat, so it can be done (but I think that one had an engine, not sails).

toilet/shower situation?

Boat have toilets, but the shower is part of the bathroom in most cases. So if you take a shower, you douse the entire bathroom with water and soap. It's pretty much not worth the effort/mess.

I think this is one of those "it looks better on paper than it actually is" situations.

Took a look at some sailboats on CL, expensive!!

1978 O'Day 32' Center Cockpit Sailboat - $17900
http://ventura.craigslist.org/boa/3111057226.html - interior looks nice but wtf toilet/shower?

***SAILBOAT-Coaster 32'--Cruise Ready--AWESOME BOAT-GREAT DEAL - $29900
http://losangeles.craigslist.org/wst/boa/3145025880.html - expensive and cramped as shit.

35' custom Yorktown Sailboat - $4800 (Wilmington)
http://losangeles.craigslist.org/lgb/boa/3140697596.html - WTF beater gonna need some mad repairs.

Conclusion: RV > Sailboat

Why don't you take the lessons, practice a bit, then go on a couple long sails and see if you really like it? You might find that you absolutely love being on the boat and don't mind the inconveniences, or you might like sailing but not like living aboard.

If it's a Pacific Seacraft, yeah. If it's a MacGregor, no. Sailboats designed to survive in the open ocean are called blue water boats. You can find them in almost any size.

No one would care if someone just motored around the world, even if they were a teenager. It was a sailboat.

Wait aren't you sick like 367 days a year? Or think you're constantly dying? How do you handle waves...are you sure your stomach is up for this?

I forgot. Bugs, lots of fuckin' bugs. Water that just sits there is a bug paradise. Get a silver turd, and move to some whitewater. The sound is nice to sleep to, and you can do fun water without bugs.

$118.50 plus electric seems high even for a summer rate. what is the winter rate?
Living on a boat is would be a lot nice in Miami than Boston IMHO and probably cheaper. You're going to be cold during the winter, how are you going to heat the boat?

You think you can save money with a boat?

Go talk to somebody that actually owns one.

Coming from someone who spent years living aboard various sailing and motor vessels of different sizes from 40' to 200', my opinion is that you will not save money living on a boat, unless it's someone else's and you're getting paid to care for it. Just as a rule of thumb figure on 10% of hull value per year in maintenance costs, and that's just to keep her sound. All of the other costs mentioned in this thread apply as well, and there are other factors: small boats are cramped, all boats are from time to time damp, they're harder to clean, and need more of it. You might dream of sailing away whenever you want but unless you're making regular passages your crap will fill up the cabin and the limited storage and you'll be unwilling to go to sea because you'd have to clean it all up first. Seen it dozens of times.

And of course, there is always the final indignity awaiting you when, after years living dockside, your stuffing box starts to leak, your bilge pump fails, and you come back from a date to find just a mast sticking up where your house used to be.
