Car is totalled. Insurance company should be paying me around $4500.
Any tips on a good used car/truck around the 5k price range? Something gas efficient.
I don't want a monthly car payment, so I would rather not use the money as a downpayment.
Any ideas? Thanks.

Also what car was totaled and what insurance company.? Always fight for more money.

1997 Pontiac Sunfire GT. The appraiser said around 4500. Real nice guy, contracted, so he was on my side. So hopefully the insurance company sucks it up and gives me that. I really don't feel like fighting with them.

God you're lucky. That car must have made you constantly fantasize about slashing your wrists whenever you'd have to drive it.

Well - the TDI Golf is a good idea, if you're not worried about VW reliability Although, I don't know if you'd be able to find one of the current generation at that price.

Must recommend Civic or Corolla...they just don't die!

Sentra or Ford Focus if you wanted a more recent model year...

It really is. $5k won't get you much from toyota or camry unless you really love a car with tons of miles.

Sentras don't die either and is byfar a much better car than Focus.

$4500 would probably only get one of the older ones that I hear less bad things about. Wasn't it mostly 98/99 up they started to be bad? It's also hit and miss, some of them are great, and some are lemons.

I'd say depends how long you want to keep it.
Sentra if you don't plan on having it for more than a few years. The SE-R's are supposed to be really fun to drive, but reliability is spotty.
Civic, Corolla, Focus, etc are more economical and will probly last longer, but aren't as fun if you ask me
