Nissan sentra. Resale on them sucks so you can get one with pretty few miles.

Must recommend Civic or Corolla...they just don't die!

Sentra or Ford Focus if you wanted a more recent model year...

Sentras don't die either and is byfar a much better car than Focus.

I like the Ford Focus ZX3.

I do to - hatches are hot

I've liked every Sentra I've owned (92, 94, 98). No problems. Great cars.

My 200SX (basically, 2-door sentra) was a decent car. Never gave me a problem

They're not bad cars, they're just suckmobiles in that they're dull econoboxes.

I like the older 200SX, I used to have one of these. Same color, 1986, except it had one of those metal louver things on the rear hatch window.

I've always had other cars that were for fun. I buy dull econboxes for everyday extremely reliable transportation. I can't think of any newer car that can be had for 5K that would in any way excite me.

if you want the car with the lowest miles that will be reliable, sentra. personally, i'd rather deal with some extra mileage for a corolla or civic just for enjoyment of the vehicle, but all three are reliable and resonably cheap to maintain.

I've owned/ driven all three and fail to see how one is more enjoyable than the other except mod possibilities.

LOL you said we were recommending dull cars and you recommended a 90 horsepower Golf. Go home, you've had a long week.

The biggest problem is I don't see you getting anymore than 4K. Probably less. Are you adding funds?

Sunroof?
Mileage?
AT or MT?

What about torque and mileage, huh?

I've driven one. I like them for what they are, but torque is of little concern when you're redlining at 3500-4000. Don't believe me? Check out its 0-60 vs a $5k sentra and you will. Found at the right price a TDI golf could be good but you have to be on bad brew to pretend that it's less dull than a sentra. Mileage will be significantly higher than a $5k sentra. The engine may be more reliable, but the rest of the car is a VW, even if VW's reliability used to be better than it is now.

Del Sol would be more fun, and of course it will be much older/higher miles than a sentra. Generally somebody spending $5k is looking for financial savings first and fun second, which would preclude something like a del sol.

I found one of these on Autotrader in Dallas. Looks nice. It's a 1998, every power option, sunroof, and only $4995. Might check it out. But then again, insurance company could attempt to screw me.

I liked mine alot. Never had a single problem mechanically with it for like 30k miles - I just got the new car itch, and bought my Scion. I sold mine a year ago for around $5.5K IIRC.

Good luck

As opposed to the unreliable POS VW suckmobile that you recommend which has a higher likelihood of leaving him stranded?

I'd rather be driving a boring Sentra that won't be in the shop every other day than that all exciting Golf TDI.
And if you try to tell me the TDI is more fuel efficient, the fact that diesel costs $0.50 more than regular, the extra mileage that you get will be negated.

Sentra > Golf

Sentra > Golf

I don't know where you are, but around here diesel is only 20-30 cents more. And a for the relentless VW bashing that goes on around here. As I already mentioned, the VW's reliability is hit and miss, some are great and some suck. Know what? The same thing is true of Sentras. Some are giants turds. That's why it pays to take a used car to a mechanic before you buy it, regardless of who made it. Maybe you would rather drive a boring Sentra, but you aren't the one soliciting car recommendations here.
