Gonna try out Networking...

I guess I have a good opportunity to really learn about Networking now at my job. The Network Engineer left to get a NICE paying job at Paramount studios and left me here all alone...and my boss is going to let me take the position if I can do it.

So first off I would like to get some sort of certification...I would have to pay for this on my own...so would you guys help me out on some budget books I can self learn with. I know some of the basics...and with some help from the good people here. I also got some good material (Thanks rogue for the Cisco PIX cmd ref). Mainly working with Cisco stuff. Catalyst 6506, PIX 515E, and 2950 switches.

Would CCNA be the easiest? Or should I go for CCNP? CCIE? ^^ I would say I'm not a complete idiot...but I would like to FULLY understand Networking.

I've learned more by reading the Cisco forums and these forums than anywhere. Also, I learned a whole lot by reading hacking books and websites as well. I don't have any certs, but will probably test out of several of them before the year's end based on my experience.

BTW, I don't claim to know everything about Cisco, but I do have a similar stack of network equipment to what you listed above, so I can be of assistance when necessary.

Its really the only way to learn. That and experience - seeing the things that shouldn't be but yet they are and you have to figure out why.

As far as certs, following the CCNA path and then to CCNP will help as it will force you to learn.

Spidey, Thanks for the help. But what book to buy was my main question. I'm not sure which book I should buy. I dont want to buy a book that looks like a foreign language to me, and I also don't think I need a dummies book. I have the lab setup already and I can play with the commands, but I want to fully understand so I can take the test and know what I need to know.


And Rogue, I too have learned alot on the forums, but I dont think I'm as gifted as you...need some reading and training materials for me to really understand. And if you want to take back your offer you can...cause I may take you up on that ^_^.

There is a lot of CCNA material online, braindumps, books, Cisco's site, Network fundamentals pages.. all free

The CCNA is a really easy fundamentals test, however it has a high percentage requirement for passing.. so it requires a higher comprehension of the material than CCNP. I have some
