ANd just a quick question (I'm a total gun newb) - I hear a lot of people say Berettas aren't all that great for precision and accuracy - true or no?
D'oh! Brain fart typo.
The G17 is larger than the G19, and so I bought a G17. I could not get a comfortable grip on the G19. The G19 is a great choice for most, but I am 6'4" and have big hands.
Berettas are fine, and like most other modern pistols, they are much more accurate than nearly any mortal shooter.
Honestly my only Beretta experience is shooting government-issue M9s (the military version of the 92FS), and I am not especially fond of the design - to me they are too large, heavy, and cumbersome for a 9mm pistol with 15 round capacity. A Glock 17 holds two more rounds, weighs 12 ounces less, has a more rounded design for a clean draw, and is sturdier and more reliable in adverse conditions. Also, the early M9s suffered a lot of problems with the slides cracking, though this has largely been corrected, and I suspect a fair amount of this came from firing very hot rounds intended for submachine gun use.
