good and affordable places to eat in nyc?

I'm going to New York City in a few days and want to get some good food while I'm there, since there are tons of places to eat there. Do you know of any good places? I'm willing to spend a bit more for particularly good places, but I also want to know about cheaper places too.

Chinatown. Basically anywhere but the really posh/trendy places and you should be ok

John's Pizza is decent. Any of the random O-bars (O'Grady's, O'Hurleys, O'Briens...etc) will have a $12 burger. There's a nice one on 44th or 46th, I forget, between 6th and 7th.

There's also Big Nicks, on the UWS (77th and broad, 71st and columbus).

Wu Liang Ye at 338 Lexington has good chinese, not expensive.

That is considered affordable? Hell I thought 8 buck burgers at Chili's/Applebee's etc was high.

nothing beats late night food like Platters (some call it chicken and rice). It's a sidewalk stand on the corner of 56th and 3rd (or 53rd and 6th...always forget which). $5 gets you a plate full of Afghani rice with naan and either chicken or lamb (gyro meat) with some veggies and their signature white and hot sauces. It's some good eating. Dont know when they set up shop but IIRC they are only there at night. There are usually two stands set up on opposite corners - I go to whichever has the shorter line

Just wait till you see the prices of that stuff in manhattan. TGIs charges $18-20 for a burger, which prompted my wife and I to find an O-bar a half block away. This was before we lived there.

They are there from lunch onwards, though definitely not as big a line at either stand. I usually eat there 4-5 times a month - good stuff for the price.

well, IIRC, it's all about the pastrami.

I mean, there's HUGE debate on best pastrami in US, Katz or Langers, and I would be pretty goddamn disapointed if I went to NY and found their pastrami lackluster

There's a Mamoun's in New Haven Connecticut too. They're open til 3am and within a couple of blocks of some of the best bars in the city. In my drinking days my friends and I would always stop off for a falafel on our way home after the bars closed.
