i am rather surprised you haven't, the show made quite a splash last year.

From finishing it up this morning I will say the Higurashi no Naku Koro ni and Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai series. First episodes left me wondering what the heck was going on, but by the end of the second season, I was more than singing its praised. Really cold moments reminiscent of Elfen Lied but without it going overboard. Cool storyline and it was easy to enjoy the personality of the characters.
I highly recommend checking it out.
I'm pretty sure there's already a third season in production. I have a clue as to where they're going with it, but the second season pretty much finished it up. Still, I'm excited to see where this separate arc will go.

Besides, there were plenty of cute chicks getting bashed in the head, having their fingernails ripped out, and their intestines pulled out
Not to mention tiny cute little girls impaling themselves in the neck with large kitchen knives

I can't comment on couple shows that I heard good things about but havnt really watched (e.g. Strike Witches, Zettai karen, Eve no jikan)
must see OVAs include Lucky Star, Mnemosyne no Musume-tachi, Goku Sayonara Zetsubo Sensei and kara no kyoukai (well, the last one is a movie to be exact).

I was thinking about starting to watch Real Drive since it has about 28-some episodes out right now... I'll have to make sure that I have them all first though .
