I would just like to point out that you are basically saying the same thing as people defending pot smoking.

For the record, in my book, pot good, SUV's bad.

Invalid comparison. Buying/selling/smoking pot is illegal...buying an SUV isn't.

hmm... that'd be an interesting debate. "what's worse for society? reckless purchases of unnecessary suvs, or recreational pot smoking?"

Actually it really is a good comparison. As I see it, people choose to buy SUV's because they can/want to, and they have an effect on other ppl, only negative. Smoking pot may be illegal (does that make it immoral? no) but when it comes down to it, it is my money, it is my lungs, AND it has little no no effect on other people.

Hmm can't handle nearly as well as a car, more likely to roll over, terrible gas mileage. No thanks. I'll stick to cars. Costs less, needs less gas, and handles better.

Any argument against SUVs in regards to size or fuel consumption should also be applied to trucks, since many(most?) SUVs are just encapsulated trucks.

That said I don't like SUVs in general. I think they're ugly.

I like SUVs. They make good obstacles to try out the handling capabilities of my Camaro SS by swerving around them as I pass. Also, I like getting a weird look by the SUV driver who has soccar ball sticker in the back window when I squeal my tires as I'm taking off next to them. It's the "Oh my God" look.

BTW- Has anyone played GTA3? I've been playing it on the PC for a couple of weeks now and laugh my ass off when the commercial for the Miabatsu Monstrosity is played. I laugh only because I know it's true of the mentality most SUV buyers have. "Your not a small person are you? So why buy a small vehicle?"

http://www.gta3warehouse.com/media/new/commercial-monstrosity.mp3

"Phil and I just had another kid, so of course we needed a bigger SUV. Being a mom is hard with soccer, football and lacrosse practice, so we bought the new Miabatsu Monstrosity. It's so big; we lost little Joey in the back and couldn't find him for an hour. When I'm rushing to the mall or talking on my cell phone, I know me and my family are safe. The new Miabatsu Monstrosity has 4-wheel drive and in amphibious mode it can cross rivers. So far I've only hit a few puddles, but it's good to know it's there. With the time I save taking shortcuts through the strip mall parking lot I can focus on the important things like gazing longingly at the pool boy or buying more exercise equipment off the TV. So what if it gets 3 miles to the gallon, I'm a mom, not a conservationist. The new Miabatsu Monstrosity, mine is bigger!"

http://www.gta3warehouse.com/media/new/commercial-monstrosity2.mp3

"I'm a marketing manager who lives in the suburbs and commutes to work on the highway. I live alone so of course a needed a vehicle that seats 12 and is equipped to drive across arctic tundra. It just makes me feel better. The new Miabatsu Monstrosity, mine is bigger!"

I just like to know what are they going to do with all of the SUV land barges when people come to the realization that they are not a sustainable vehicle choice. Cuba? I think they get all of our old rejects.

Your profile says you live in Buffalo and you can't see any reasons to own an SUV?
How much snow did you get over the last few years?

Gimme a break. You mean to tell me that SUV drivers don't make mistakes and that when they do (which they don't) their vehicles aren't more dangerous than cars?
Can you please explain to me why you need/want an SUV? Is it because you are secretly a malemommy but are too insecure for a minivan? Do you offroad? Do you like the poor handling and performance? Does it make you feel manly and powerful?

Where did I say they don't make mistakes? Everyone makes mistakes. If suvs are more dangerous than cars, then anything bigger than a car is more danguos than a car. Buses, Semi's, and RV's should all be banned from the roads if SUVs are too.

Mom wanted something bigger than a mini van and she likes riding high up. So she got the Denali(not the XL mind you). Dad wanted something with mpg than the truck, needed something to tow behind the RV, and didn't like the idea of my younger brother driving a red 69 Comaro SS. So he got the Jeep(which my brother thinks is the best thing since sliced bread). I got the Ram because I wanted one. Its a Southern thing. At first mom wanted the 380SL but then she changed her mind so its not used that much.

Yes I've been off-roading and hunting in my truck, I highly doubt mom will off-road, and I will bet you $500 my brother will try to the first day he has his licence.

If I wanted to be manly and powerful I would have asked for a Viper and my dad would have got a Hummer instead of the Jeep.

Yes, people should be able to buy what they want with their money, but I find two major problems with SUVs.

SUVs (and pickup trucks) are much more dangerous on the road to passenger car drivers. Most of them have bumpers elevated far above the hood of many cars and would demolish a car in a collision. I can't stand the arguement that "I like SUVs because they're safer" - maybe safer for the driver (which is also debatable), but you're endangering other people in doing so.

Quote
All of them go through gas like a blow torch through butter but, I know for a fact the first 3 meet the emmission stands for GA, I dunno about the last one.

That's not really the point - the emissions standards for "light trucks" is much less stringent then regular passenger cars. I'm not only referring to "Econo-Boxes" either - The new 2003 Accord meets California emissions standards, which I guarentee is much less then any fuel-driven light truck.

Before a hail of flame is thrown at me - I realize that some people have good uses for their SUVs and trucks. But I'm almost positive that the majority of the drivers don't use them for anything except daily commutes, or anything else that a car could not do. That's why the whole situation disgusts me.

Before the SUV craze, there weren't many SUVs on the road. It's reasonable to assume that most of the people that used SUVs for their intended purpose (heavy duty work) would have purchased one anyway. The majority of the new SUV sales are from people that just think it's "cool" - and, there's nothing wrong with that, except the safety reason I mentioned above.

Just cause something is legal or not doesn't mean it's a "good" thing or not. People have a responsibility to society, it's not called a society for no reason. SUV's are anti-social. You people driving SUV's have NO right, NONE WHATSOEVER, to make my air environment worse than it has to be, by making the roads more dangerous than they have to be, and etc. You want to pay? Ok. Go pay your fair share, then, because you don't.

Oh.. has anyone seen that mercedes ad that says something like "with our suv, you'll be wondering with amazement as the cars bow down to you" or some crap like that. Coincides perfectly with the mentality of the typical soccermom SUV driver, I bet.

Lemme get this straight.. You have the right to raise your SUV so your bumper strikes right at my head height, smashing my brain into mush? You have a right to raise your SUV so it rides ride over my car ripping my head off? Well I guess your self centered just like the typical SUV owner... Well I care about my right to live. Thank You.

I dont mid SUV's, but I hate these oversized Mobile Homes on wheels, with one small, tiny person driving back and forward to work on the highway. We are making irresponsible choices, there is no excuse for that. The truth of the matter is that regular not cool station wago, or a regular sedan, can do just fine for most of the users. Or these small SUV's from Subaru/Volvo, which feature all the goodies you would need like 4x4 while not being ovesized.
My point is: Think before you buy!
Also, American car makers dont really care about the fuel efficiency. All the work in that regards was done in Europe and in Japan. We have plenty catching up to do in that regards.
Fuel cells are the way to go, because this type of fuel is very common on the earth and clean!
Why not to use that technology?

If SUVs are more dangerous than cars? They ARE. Your comparison is horseshit. Buses and RVs serve a purpose. SUVs don't. You are justified in owning a truck since you use it for its purpose, but 99% of SUV owners don't. Why did your mom want a vehicle bigger than a minivan???

Who among you tards can answer these questions?
  • What is the "intended use" of a Corvette Sport Coupe?
  • What is the "intended use" of a Dodge Viper?
  • What is the "intended use" of a Ferrari 360?
  • What is the "intended use" of that cute spoiler on the back of your ricemobile?
  • What is the "intended use" of the ground effects of your ricemobile?
  • What is the "intended use" of the 17" rims of your ricemobile?

By the way, I would like to add that SUVs are not necessarily safer for the driver, especially in collisions with other SUVs. What do you think happens when the bumper of that other SUV hits the door of your Escalade? It can flip. My friend's RAV4 was hit by someone a couple days ago, and it nearly tipped over, but stopped short and fell back down.
My old 240sx ended up in a ditch thanks to some gravel. If you could see the depth of the ditch you would agree that an SUV would have flipped.

There are 5 poeple in my family(Mom, dad, and 3 teenage boys) and 2 dogs. The mini-vans didn't give us the cargo room and we also tow a lot. We use the truck for towing around town and the Denali for longer trips.

No, I don't have the right to raise the hight with the intent to kill you. But you don't have the right to take away our choices because your vehical happens to be shorter than ours. Now I don't like those people with the 500ft lift kits either but its their right to put them if them so choose.

btw- I really don't concider a RAV-4 a true SUV.

Do those endanger other people? And since when do people use Ferrari 360s and Vipers as daily drivers?? Are you insane?

Speaking of tards! Didn't answer a single question, did ya, sport? What's the point of any go-kart with over 100HP? Rapid acceleration ain't so safe either, is it? SUV buyers want a full framed, V8, RWD vehicle that doesn't look like "your father's Oldsmobile". Now, what do you suggest they buy, mouth?
