Good Bose Setups

My parents are looking for a good Bose system. Anyone have any suggestions for the best bang/buck setups? Ideally we'd like the multiple small satellite setups as space is a big concern.

Please no Bose vs. the world debates. If anyone has suggestions for a non-Bose space-saving setup and can present a good argument for it, that'd be cool too.

Bose only looks good, they only sound good in "very" ideal studio settings. A few years back I bought a bose lifestyle 10 system...sounded really bad when i got it home. Anyhow, I then purchased a JBL surround sound system, i think the model was scs20 or something...much much better. I would go for a JBL or Nakamichi Soundspace system.

I woulda suggested not to ask here, because there was a thread with a poll like yesterday on if you liked BOSE, and I believe the option "BOSE Blows" was the winner.

Alright, alright, let's save the BOSE bashing for my thread and help this guy out You need a space-saving setup? A microsystem i assume. How much are your parents looking to spend? What are they planning to use it for? What kind of hardware are they planning to hook up? DVD, CD, cassette, tape, records?

Thanks to those who have offered help or alternative suggestions.

To the guy who suggested I research, well this is my research. I haven't found a site that has comprehensive side-by-side comparisons/reviews of systems but if you have any suggestions, I'd love to hear of some. The reason we are primarily looking at Bose systems right now is to be honest, because of their rep and a few listens at friends' places. We're not audiophiles but we were impressed by the room-filling sound and the clarity for the size. Judging from the reactions here I guess there's much better to be had for the money and that's partly why I posted. So far the Nakamichi Soundspace, Adire Kanada, Acoustic-Research, Anthony Gallo, and JBL lines look cool, I'll look into these. Does anyone know what places carry them that have demos?

I think our price range will completely max out at $1000 for a system, but for us to spend that much it would have to really kick ass. We are looking for just a Lifestyle-type system, with satellites that are small but powerful. A good sub is always a plus, but we probably don't have room for anything huge. It's primarily going to be for music and home theater use. d1abolic, I would guess it will be used for CD, DVD, VHS and audio tapes. Lifestyle-sized would be nice but not necessary, just no large speakers other than the sub.

Does the $1000 include a receiver or is that just for the 5 speakers and sub? If you can spend about $850 on the speakers themselves, i would have to recommend the Definitive Technology ProCinema 80. As far as i can tell, this is as good as sound gets for under $1000. I've put a lot of research into it because i've been searching for a similar system myself. And i love this one so much that i'm going to buy it later this week. If you want to read some user reviews of this system, go here.
