Good but not very expensive 2.0 speakers

I currently have a set of ATP3 speakers, but the left speaker connector seems to have broken, so I'm considering upgrading them. I mostly use speakers for music (classical music and classic rock - not much bass) and the occasional movie. I'd prefer to avoid having a sub if possible, mostly due to size issues. First, I'm wondering how much of an impact this will have on the sound quality. Second, what are a good set of 2.0 speakers that are < $100 (preferrably around $80, but I can go up to $100 if they'll last and are worth it). I've heard about the Swans, but they're $180, which I can't afford. I've also heard that klipsch has released a 2.0 set that have msrp of $99, but they're not available anywhere for less than $99 (and not available in general). I'm wondering if anyone can suggest a good set of 2.0 speakers that are in this price range.
Thanks,
David

You won't get good quality sound without a subwoofer in the mix. At least not by the standards most of us are willing to live with. Just speakers (no sub) are fine for windows only sounds... Any games, tunes, and such will sound so weak that you'll be kicking yourself for getting them.

That being said, take a look at the Logitech X-230 speakers... They have a MSRP of $50 and are unreal as to how good they really sound. I picked up a set for my cousin as her xmas gift and I got to hear them for the first time a week or so later... For speakers of that size, they KICK ASS... Really worth getting, would be worth getting at $100, but you can get them for $50 or less (I got them for $35) which makes them an even better deal...

I did some reasearch and found that the best place to place a sub is in the corner of a room. So maybe that'll help with the size issues.

Also like the guy said above. You really neeed a sub, especially for the amount of money you are willing to spend.

The Creative Labs T3000 or whatever the latest 2.1 model is, is pretty damn good. It's $50 as well and it delivers damn good sound at an affordable price.

How much are those speakers though?? Are they about $50?? The Logitech sound like they should cost over $100, but don't... I'm sure you can find them under the MSRP ($50) if you look a bit... I know I got them for less, but then again I have sources...

I have seen the Klipsch, and $100 is at the top of my price range, but I'd rather spend less if possible. The problem with the klipsch from what I've been hearing from all the responses (thanks everyone for the help) is that I should really stick with a subwoofer for any decent sound. How applicable is this to the klipsch? I don't mind spending $100 if I can avoid having the subwoofer and still get the same sound quality (remember that I really don't listen to much stuff with a lot of bass). I was looking around for the klipsch, but no one has them for less than MSRP. Anyone know of anywhere that would have them for less?
Otherwise I'll probably get the logitechs - they seem to be fairly cheap and good quality, and the subwoofer doesn't seem to be too big (at least its smaller than my current one).
Thanks for all the help,
David

I tried to google the Klipsch for some reviews on them but they are just too new. Newegg doesnt even carry them.
