I actually had a Packard Bell before the pentium II Dell XPS. It was a peice of shit.

But it was good enough to get me on Prodigy, AOL and the other service. (what was it called?)
We had a friend whose brother was some mucky-muck at one of the big-name retail computer places...Comp USA maybe?
She got us a deal on a "gently used" Packard Bell 386 with Windows 3.0. (1992-93 IIRC) Horrible POS. Still...it was miles ahead of the NCR 8088 with dual 5 1/4" floppies I'd been using and tweaking for a couple of years.

I remember our first real PC was an IBM Aptiva with Windows 95. It came with a whole bunch of games (most notably: Pitfall The Mayan Adventure, Hyperman, Cyberia, and Silent Steel). Then we upgraded to a Compaq Presario with Windows 98. I eventually put a Quantum3D Raven card in that thing. Lots of good times on that Compaq.

Prebuilt? We had to acid wash our own Apple ][ clone mb. Well it was my cousin's and I just stirred it a bit.

Mine was delivered to my house from Taipei. /spoilt brat.

Oh hell, if we're going to go all the way back, my family's first PC was a HealthKit H88 (or89?). Then my dad got an IBM.

We played a text based game called "Adventure" on that obsessively.

Pictured here with the first and only granddaughter he ever met in 1986 (he died a few months later):

We started out with a different faux woodgrain 7-in-1 pong clone from Sears I think? Pop would hard limit our time on it. Sales dude warned him about burn-in. He'd troll us hard sometimes and boot us off during the last game of a set when things are heated and you are trash talking each other. Still a better game than LoTR: Gollum.

ahh my 486 sx 33 pack bell with win 3.1. got it from sears! it had a CD drive which was amazing, so i could play the fancy oregon trail CD
That was our first PC after years of owing an Apple IIc, except no CD drive as they weren't commonplace in consumer PCs when we got ours. It was actually an alright machine, other than the 240MB hard drive dying very shortly after the warranty expired. We upgraded to a 420MB and it was glorious. Did add a single speed CD-ROM drive later... should have waited, since every game required a 2X drive not long after.

Wait, so lxskllr no longer has Poe in his avatar, but manahan does? I can't tell what is reality anymore.
I thought manahan has had something with Poe for over ten years?

Due be having a stash of Amontillado and got beating hearts under the floodboards of his house.

we went from a 170 MB hard drive on the first one to a 420 MB on the next machine and the difference was amazing

i remember thinking "i'll never run out of this much hard drive space!"

i had another great poet (wiz khalifa) as my avatar for years

but then somehow a pome thread a few years ago led me to change it to poe

and then a hat thread led me to give him a fedora

Man this hit me hard. I've read this site daily for as long as I can remember. It's a part of my routine. A lot has changed in 20+ years.

Thanks for being part of the good times!
