Is there a cheap product that you can fill walls in with that is better than fiberglass insulation?

We're setting up music room in the garage and are going to make a wall in front of the garage door to help block sound from the neighbors.

You're gonna have to tell me what kind you do mean.

The only expanding stuff I know about comes in a can with an injector nozzle and trigger.

Mu suggestion would simply be foam padding. It insulates against sound a little better than normal heat insulation materials.
You can usually purchase big sheets of it at hardware stores.

I saw some at Fred Meyer that were 4 inches thick and about 4 feet by 10 feet.

Egg cartons. Seriously, when you make your room with whatever foam you use, line it with egg cartons (or egg carton shaped foam). The shape of the carton does wonders for noise reduction.

This is what I was going to recommend.

What about for adding insulation to existing walls? WHat's the easiest way to do that?

We're having a second child this fall and may want to put something in the walls between the baby's room and my 3 year old's room so they don't wake each other up...

If you have drums, home brew methods are going to be tough.

I'd fill the walls with fiberglass, on the outside of the wall probably hang masonry board, then the egg crate and then hang heavy 'blankets' about 6"-12" from all the walls.

Neighbors still probably will be pissed.

I'd get a band friendly 24/7 mini storage unit. Cheap and usually in places where no one lives or as one of my friends said at the time "just ghetto people and no one cares what they think"

Insulations cut down high frequency noise, and air gap reduce lower frequency. Google is a good place to start.

Old mattresses, or nail some insulation to the walls and cover them with blankets.

I think the best advise is what Alkemyst said and just rent a 24/7 storage unit if you like your neighbors.

If you have the resources and time, rebuild the walls into double stud walls. Basically build one side of the wall, then install another set of studs offset 1/2 inch or so for the sheetrock on the other side. This way, there is no physical connection from one side to the other for the sound to travel through. The only path will be through the insulation material. This helps a lot more for the lower frequencies. Blue foam 4 x 8 sheets are good as well.

You may also consider egg crate foam on the inside of the room depending on how serious you are about music.

There are better products than the can stuff in the can that professional insulators use. It expands a lot slower so it's it's easier to control when you apply it to open walls.

Cool thanks. We're not going to be banging on drums all day so this is not too serious a project. It's half just to make things look a little nicer and make it hard for people to look into the garage.

But it would be nice to be able to play Nintendo and listen to music late at night without bothering the neighbors. And we'll probably use it to jam during the day at times.

The walls I'm making from scratch. They will just be 8' 2x4's with drywall on both sides and insulation in the middle. I just hope you can still get 2x4's for a couple of dollars.

I hope Martinez is more "garage-band" friendly than Modesto is. One of my neighbors got charged with disturbing the peace and got 6 months probation because her 17 year old son's garage band chose their garage to practice in...
(yes, it requires a neighbor to file a complaint)

seriously nintendo and listening to music shouldn't be too much an issue.

A live drum kit is usually the problem. Even on stage with orchestras and the like they usually booth the drums and mic. them.

Mineral wool - In wall (amazing sound proofer). Fiberglass panels also work

Sound board - Under sheetrock (buy at any home depot)

Not the slightest bit of sound will make it through that. You wont find anything better than that set up.

At the very least just go to Home depot and get the soundboard. Stuff is fantastic.

12 sq ft for 11.00

Is 12 sq ft considered "bulk"?

Lol.

Can you guys think of anything other than drywall to make the walls out of? If it worked OK maybe even some heavy cloth or something?

I just hate to buy all the drywall knowing I won't be able to recycle it in a couple of years when I move. Insulation, 2x4s.. all that I could use again.
