The thread about how much $ incase of SHTF scenario got me thinking about what's really more useful when it happens. and that's a gun.

but a handgun aint going to cut it in case of doomsday/zombie attack.

but a full size rifle is too big/bulky.

I saw this compact rifle: PIC

yes, it's not real.

but what's a good compact rifle? WHY?

edit:
So far we have

PS90 - looks cool, but bullets hard to get + expensive
ar15 VARIANT, with a short barrel and a collapsable stock -> any cons?
AK 74 (not ak47?!) -> bullets plentiful, very reliable, but is it compact/light weight?

What gun is this?

Two questions:
How old are you?
Are you a university student?

A good compact rifle that is Commiefornia legal?

Here's a better idea, move to a free state before SHTF.

Seeing as this is certainly going to devolve into a "post your favorite counterstrike gun" thread, I'll throw in my uninformed $.02.

A 9mm submachine gun with hollowpoints will be enough for me, thanks. Provided you don't have to hit anything at a serious range, I think you'd be set.

If legality is no issue I'd LOVE a P90. If you have to stay legit then you're stuck with a PS90. Still by far my favorite pdw.

Why? Ammo is pretty damn expensive, and it has no stopping power against someone who isnt wearing body armor.

No to mention its not exactly easily concealable.

That being said, the design is sexy.

You are still limited to semi auto no matter what you have... so if you want the most penetration, I would get an AR-15 variant, with a short barrel and a collapsable stock.
7" Barrel Version Here

If you're worried about zombies, I'd get a semi-auto 12 gauge shotty.

Ammo is expensive, but it's got way better ballistics than any smg due to the 5.7x28 (versus standard 9mm or .45). To get anything better you have to move up to a full size rifle. Remember that a pdw isn't an assault rifle...it's for cqb. You can't find too many smaller weapons in the same category out there.

It's the most ambidextrous weapon I've ever held, and in fact the most comfortable overall. Forward ejection is the bomb. Even the civilian variant can take the 50rnd mag's with no modification if you can find them. Recoil is AMAZING for the overall tradeoffs.

I've fired a lot of weapons, and within it's category nothing else even comes close for me. The only downsides are ammo cost, and ammo rarity.

A Mini-14 is a good choice - fairly compact, inexpensive, ammo pretty easy to find. If a stock Mini-14 is too large, you can always go with a folding stock from someone like Choate.

Semi-automatic shotgun would be best for a zombie attack. Shotgun ammo is probably the easiest to find.

You live in California? wlel that complicates things ALOT...

I'd recommend a semi-auto shotgun as well, like the Saiga S-12, but since you cannot legally refit it with collapsible stock and pistol grip and large capacity magazines then I wouldn't go with it

How about a pre-ban AR-15 in a M4 carbine style (collapsible stock/shorter barrel) or a pre-ban AK47 with foldable stock? The problem is you are going to have to pay out the nose for good condition preban models in these configurations. I live in NY state which has similar Nazi gun laws (yes, the Nazis were huge on gun control) but I was able to get around it with my AR15 by getting a preban model

The rifle that sits in my BOB is a Kel-Tec Sub2000 9mm that accepts Glock 17 & 18 mags. The nice thing about the Sub2000 is it folds in half for storage, literally, folds in half (Link). It's not the nicest gun to shoot, but it's accurate, and powerful enough to shoot small game and BG's.

If I have the option though, I'm grabbing my AK on the way out the door.

You can avoid a lot of legal and cost issues if you just go for a small/medium caliber semi auto deer rifle, say a .243 or a .270. It won't be compact, but they don't weigh a whole lot anyway. Plus, you can hunt larger game once the grocery stores are sacked and you've got a weapon that's pretty good at long range. The ammo is cheap and you'll have more stopping power per round than most any assault rifle. Not ideal for close quarters or for dozens of targets at once, but it's not that bad either if you have spare clips and such.

Similar idea is to just get a shotgun. You lose range but get serious short range stopping power. For food you can kill squirrels and birds.

No kidding. If someone shot me with one of those, and I found out about it, I would be PISSED!

I already have my SHTF setup going, and it isnt just one rifle.

SHTF handgun box

SHTF carbine

SHTF Battle rifle

All of those stay loaded, and in soft cases, ready to grab at a moments notice (exception are the handguns, which is a hard case). There are a total of 12 loaded mags with the AR (10 in pouches, and two with a mag coupler loaded in the rifle). There are 6 20rd mags with the m1a in its soft case (5 in pouches and one in rifle).

There are two .45 (HK USP45 Tacitcal and 1911) handguns with 108 rounds of ammunition, 1 glock 19 9mm with 162 rounds of ammo, a .22 LR pistol (Walther P22, soon to be replaced by Sig Mosquito), and the S&W .460 - which can also shoot .45 Long Colt and .454 Casull. 15 rounds total for that monster.

I also keep them loaded and ready just in case I decide I want to go shooting, they just dont sit there until something is about to happen. If I had to scrounge for ammo I should be able to find something that will fit one of those.

I will probably have my CCW with me if I have to bug out as well.

I must say I am pretty surprised though to see someone talking about SHTF scenarios here and being prepared- I thought I'd never see some of the same discussions on the survival forums I read being talked about here!

Out of curiosity- any of you read the famous SHTF internet novel "Lights Out" ??

sorry for going off-topic there, OP

The P(s)90 doesn't have forward ejection. The ejection port is in the main grip and ejects straight down. The FN2000 is the one with forward ejection.

I would like to get a PS90. I bought my RRA ar-15 a week ago and the next day at another gun shop I found a PS90 with brass catcher, 2x50Rnd bags, tri-rail top with the optic on it for $1200 on the used wall. I would have bought that in a heart beat, if I hadn't already plunked down the money on the AR and extra p-mags.

.556 would be very hard to find. 5.56 would be easier and if the rifle is a .223 wylde chamber you can run the 5.56Nato or the .223 Remington.

For an ultimate SHTF situation type gun, nothing beats a AK clone. They are uber reliable, pack a good punch and ammo isn't to hard to find.

Semi-auto shotgun would be the best for my area, everyone has a shotgun. Next would be a .308, but those are too bulky to carry around.

Wow, I am tired. *goes for more coffee*

5.56 is what I meant.
