Become proficient with most any reasonable set of reliable firearms in common calibers and then cheap and plentiful ammo is the key.
I would recommend;
22 lr
12 ga
9 x 19 mm
.223 (5.56)
7.62 x 39

procure the weapons and then practice.
As for carbines, I'm partial to the
storm

Would zombies figure out the clang sound of an emptied M-1 Garand?
I always wanted an M-1, even if it's impractical in todays world.

I like the look of the CX4 Storm. Bud's has them for cheap!

Only in .40s&w though, otherwise I would have picked up the 9mm one.

To foofoo, I disagree on .223 and 7.62x39. They're too similar to be using both. x39 should be replaced with its big brother 54r, .308 or 30-06.

I was offered a Marlin .44mag lever action for one of my .22lr pistols. One of my coworkers likes his combo, a Ruger GP100 and a Marlin .357 lever action. He only has to stock up on one type.

It's not the apocalypse, guys. All those that are rolling their eyes and saying that we're stupid for making some kind of contingency plan for a hiccup in society's normal operation are naive themselves.

Some people have rock-solid faith in our supporting infrastructure. Other's think that that infrastructure is, in fact, relatively fragile.

I can imagine any number of scenarios where public services (law enforcement) and private services (for example, your local grocery stores where you buy all of your food) could easily fail.

It's smart to think ahead, it's stupid not to think ahead.

One important thing to remember is that unless the circumstances demand it, all good survivalists will seek above all to avoid confrontation. The guns only come into play because you can't know if the situation will arise where you cannot avoid confrontation.

I personally love my M4 (forgery, heh) and my Beretta 92FS 9mm. I'm familiar with both, and comfortable with both. I would be confident that in most situations I could rely on the equipment.

I think that scavenging for ammunition is a somewhat relevant point, which is why most AK and foreign chambers should be avoided. I'd say that in the US, you'd have an easier time finding Remington .223 than the rounds used by AKs.

My local Gander Mountain has a few. *sigh* The wife wouldn't approve the expense though.

Hi Kelvrick -
They have somewhat similar ballistics (7.62 x 39 is better IMHO) but I was trying to make the point that at some point your stockpiled ammo will run out and you want to have the capability to shoot whatever you can get your hands on. These are the most (I believe) readily available calibers in the US.
I didnt go for the .308, (though I personally own the remington LTR in .308) because hunting deer is just fine with a 7.62 x 39 and in this fantasy scenario, .308 is overkill for most everything but long range.

eh.. looks cool and sure it takes standard handgun ammo (ie: 9mm), but largest capacity clip is 20 LINK. not much more than a standard 17rounder of a glock.

if i'm going assault rifle, i want lots of bullets w/o reload.

Screw all that high priced tech crap, shit hits the fan have a M1 .30 CARBINE next to ya and you are good to go w/ some 30rd mags.

Very small frame, light, easy to manuver and as fast as you can pull that trigger it going to perform.

If you're going to take a carbine that shoots a pistol bullet, you might as well get that KelTec that takes Glock magazines.

M1 Carbines are on Gunbroker for about 600 bucks - my AR was $675, and .223 is more common than .30 Carbine. I'd still love to have one, though..
