My old 17" monitor has given up on me after 12 years of service. Can someone recommand a good replacement, preferably 19"?
A have a very big desk, so I want to save some money and get a CRT monitor.

If you have lots of desk space, as I do, step up to a VG used 22". Check out the 19~22"
Mits/NECs at http://www.azatek.com/ I wish the budget could justify the 24"HP/Sony

I bought a Mit 2060u NF >4years ago from these folks and it still runs as new. High-end
units refresh so fast there is no eye strain.

I picked up a second-hand Compaq P910 (rebadged monitor - it's one of the flat-screen 19" aperture-grille monitors that do 1920x1440@60Hz or so). Still haven't come across anything that beats it for $75 CDN, which is what I paid.

Just my opinions here.
Referbs kind of scare me. Why was it referbed? Was it just open box or a return w/o a real complaint? Did a State side tech have to do a rework?

The last of the truely good CRTs were built in Japan and adjusted by Nipponese techs, all the default settings are locked-in at this time.

This is not my thread and the OP is looking for a 19" but a VG 22"used can be had at close to the price of a new 19". The 24"HP/Sony was just a quip.

Two known short comings of Sony CRTs. The apiture grill is not very strong and a service techs degaussing magnet can pull on the grill if held too close, causing damage. They have a record of cold solder joints and that can cause issues. Even knowing both, the 24"would be considered if I had the $$$.

I had a CTX PL9 as my primary monitor. It did 1600x1200 @ 75 or 85Hz. Bought it new for a hair under $200.
The CTX EX950 if they still make it was pretty good too. I loved that big guy.

Although due to space constraints it was replaced with LCD's.

Thanks for all the replies. I live in Denmark, so all those nice monitors with free shipping are no use to me :-(

I think I will buy a used monitor for now, as my budget is kinda low as long as I am studying.

Any experiences with Samsung Syncmasters? There are rather a lot for sale near me.

The NF series of Syncmasters are excellent.

Google reviews. IIRC, the SyncMaster rated very well indeed, much better than the Viewsonic. Look for the highest resolution and refresh rate you can afford. Look for convergance problems before you buy if possible. Look at the display cornors well.
Small world we're in, Azatek is owned by Russians. The heavy accent was off-putting
the first time I called them. Decent place to do business with though.

Philips Brilliance 109P4. A great 19" aperture grill tube monitor. Highly recommended.

19" Samsung 959NF - 1600x1200@85HZ
1280x 960@100HZ (w. VSYNC!)

VERY good picture quality but unfortunately no DVI.

Why not go for LCD ?

LCD is much more expensive, especially if you want a good response time.

I have a Sony 19 inch CRT, model I think is G900, the screen turns white-er and have 5 black lines running across after 2 1/2 year of use.

I'd say stay away from Sony brand.

save money? crt is dead. any money tossed its way at this point is just a waste. 19" lcds are cheap now. there was a time when crt was still a good deal when lcd had tons of drawbacks, but those are mostly gone, and the advantages are just impossible to ignore.

yea i had a g400 sony, it faded to uselessness. but crts do fade from use no way around it. more and more eyestrain

remember lcds measurement is actual screen space. crt is tube size, so minus 1-2" is actual size. 19" crt and 17" lcd are about the same in otherwords. and face it, if ur a student u spend your time looking at text. text on lcd is crisper and there is less eyestrain. even on the cheapest lcds.
