Good deal for $400?

I'm in the market for a gaming PC, can't afford to spend 1000 dollars building one at the moment so I've been browsing eBay and Craigslist for any deals which might be interesting.

I found this on Craigslist and thought it looked like a decent deal.
http://cincinnati.craigslist.org/sys/3050357997.html

The guy was asking 600 for it but said he would take 400.

Is this a solid deal? What sort of performance am I looking at with this PC?

Not sure if this counts as a price check (which isn't allowed on the forums...) but that's very good for $400. The CPU itself costs $150 new, and GTX 285 sli is about equal to GTX 560 Ti which costs $200 new (see 285 vs 560 ti).

edit: misread that, thought it's 285 sli not 275 sli... well, no matter, 275 is only slightly slower

Ignoring the money side of things that rig running on a 600W PSU is really pushing the limits.

Especially the POS DiabloTek that's in the pics. Even, so $400 + an $80 AR AP 750TX is still a good deal. You certainly couldn't build a new machine with that level of gaming performance for $500.

No HDD? If the OP doesn't have one to toss in there that'd be an added cost. Plus an OS unless seller is throwing that into the mix as well.

Too bad that DA power supply is NOT a 600W power supply, except in someone's imagination.

This is the ps in that computer:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817822013

The +12V rail is "rated" at 40A, or 480W. Given Diablotek is junk and overspec'd, it's probably capable of 350W at best on that rail. Further, no PFC...it even has a voltage input selector on the rear, a dead giveaway the unit is a way old, P4 era design.

Honestly, I'd pass on the thing and look around for someone who built with better quality parts, even if it cost more. Why? Have to replace the power supply with something you can trust, have to buy a hard drive, operating system....then trust the POS DA ps hasn't shit on something internally. You won't be able to test the damned thing before buying, so feel like gambling with your $400?

Maybe that's why he's trying to get rid of it... it may keep crashing on him and he can't figure it out.

As long as you can look inside the case and power it up (bring your own HDD with OS on it...) it wouldn't be a bad place to start for $400.

True.....but I'd definitely want to test it out thoroughly, though, as you suggested. That power supply gives me shivers....it's one of the worst on the market and was probably putting out power that was beyond ATX spec with ripple when stressed (turned on). No telling how much the life of the other components have been compromised by that piece of crap.

I think his question was "why is it against the rules?". To answer that with "because it's against the rules" obviously doesn't make any sense.

So, if you are looking at a good deal, that it is. If you are looking for a fully functional computer for $400, that it is not.

I thought a price check was more of a "Hey I have a superuberitemXYZ i want to list FS how much would you pay for it?" and that would occur in the FS/FT or hot deal forums.

What is the general consensus here on AT???

Makes sense, if your example occurred to any great extent on these forums I can definitely see it becoming annoying. The OP's question, on the other hand, seems fair enough and I do not find it annoying at all. What was in the mind of the rule makers when they made the rule, I have no idea.

Why is a price check bad? Just curious?

If you allow them, the board will get filled with people wanting a free appraisal service. So, basically the rule tries to combat spammy useless threads.

I agree that this particular thread is kind of in a gray area. It's a legitimate enough question to be OK in my book.

L0L...
Imagine how clean these forums would be if there were no "Help me build" threads?

I can dream, can't I?

Those are ok in my book, I just don't care for the 'what do you think of these parts I already purchased' threads.
