Here's what I know from this thread and according to my friend's experience with his Kenwood 72 True-x drive. If you have a burner and you re-burn (copying from other cdrs) a lot, then you shouldn't get this drive. If you so happen to know a friend with a huge original music cd collection, this is a pretty good drive considering it can do 45x audio extraction (I don't think my friend ever got that high w/ his drive though.)

I have Kenwood SCSI 52X, you think they'll exchange 72X SCSI for a reasonable price? hehehe

Just to make this clear to everyone. I did the 52X upgrade to 72X for the $30.00 fee. ANYONE who owns a Kenwood drive can upgrade for the $30.00 price! Reguardless if your current kenwood cd-rom is working or not. Its just a upgrade option that Kenwood offers. But good luck getting a tech on the phone. I think they only have 1 or its 2 techs for phone support. Leave your phone number and a message also make sure the number you give them you will be at most of the day! If not you will have to call them again if they call and you miss them. Its a hassle but $30.00 for a CD-ROM upgrade you cant beat it. I posted this is the Hardware Fourms a few months back.

Good Luck

The 72x isn't even worth $30. I would go for full cash refunds if I were you guys! Look... M$ who everyone hates is replacing free of charge and overnight shipping the defective Intellimouse Explorers just for calling them and telling them some serial # on the bottom of the mouse.

I also "upgraded" to the 72x for $30 after my 52x died late last year. If your current drive stopped all you gotta do is email tech support and they will give you an RAM number. After I got my RAM number I called customer service and asked if I could do the "upgrade." However, it did take calling them a couple of times to get through customer service. I called during the day.

I upgraded to the 221 firmware once I got it and haven't had any problems, although I haven't tried CDR or CDRW disks. I rip UP TO 45x, actually up to 50x peak. It basically does ~28-30x min, upper 30-lower 40s average.

First and foremost I have to thank lzpoof for posting this...

I bought the 42X when it first came out...about 2 years ago if my memory serves me straight. Every since day one...it plane sucked. I got so fed up with it that I put it in the closet and never thought about it again until this thread came up.

I e-mailed kenwood and basically copied and pasted his e-mail. They replied and said it was defective and that I should send it in and get it rmaed... Two weeks later I recieved the new drive in the mail and it was a 72X drive. I put it in and the first test was cd-rs. I tried to rip (using audiocatalyst) music off an old cd-r and amazingly it riped a 65min cd in about 1 and 1/2 mins flat (extraction and encoding to MP3). I averaged 45X-50X extraction. Man was I surprised. Next test, I put in a scratched CD-R and tried to rip. Understand that this particular cd-r is beyond reading...my philips cd-rw and my raite dvd can't read it at all. It ripped the damn thing averaging 40X DAE with about 2 possible errors. Man....I don't know but I have to say this thing is beyond fast. To think I was going to trade it off but now that I've tested it...I'm keeping it. Shoot...ripping a 4 min song in about 3-4 secs. is incredible but I do it. I've done it with about 15 other cd's now...all cd-rs. This drive is beautiful, if you can get one that works. =)

I purchased a Kenwood 52X over 2 years ago. Most of the time it performs fine with original CDs and audio CDs. But totally stinks with CD-Rs. Any CD-R. It's the most temperamental CDROM drive I've seen. So since then, I've used TDK, Asus or Toshiba for anything critical.

Good thread. I'll see if the firmware update helps. Haven't used this drive much.

Thanks for all the comments and insight.

burnedout, I'd recommend doing the RMA and possibly doing an upgrade to the 72x. You'll be thankful you did. I'm starting to wonder about upgrading to the 72x myself...

Send two emails to customer support and never heard back from them. Just sent the last one out and if this won't work I guess I'll start calling them. How fast did you people get replies from them? Did you email to support@kenwoodtech.com or some other email address?

thanks

ther is no good deal on a Kenwood Truex. I have owned the 40x POS, sent back for a refund because it would not read CDRW's. The 52x POS after being replaced 3 times under warranty was "upgraded?" to a 72x POS that doesn't work correctly with Fireburner. Right now I have a door stop collection consisting of a 52x POS that won't read anything and a 72x POS that doesn't work correctly. I would not spend another penny on a Kenwood POS truex drive again.

Its wild to see all the conflicting tales of the Kenwood Drive. I have a 72x true and frankly I love it... its fast as hell. I've not had problem reading CD-R media (even the cheap ass stuff I've been using) and the DAE is amazing (I average close to 40X).

I called Kenwood today, and got through to them, and an RMA number no problem. They didn't even ask how old it was. I have to ship it to them and await a replacement. I gotta say the customer service is a helluva lot better than Creative's long distance lying customer service! I'm gonna give Kenwood a chance here. I'm gonna send them a reciept for shipping as well. We'll see how they handle it.
