Why do I get the impression you may be a seller?
Interesting reply. Right on the money with most of those "known-name" companies. But what do you mean that Tektronix is out of business? They have secured some large contracts after HP sold off its measurement device division to Aglient.Originally posted by: atomsite
Tektronix is out of the business. Wavetek is now Meterman. Beckman sold their line. Etc. Etc.

Edit 2 - the website that the OP referred to, has the 0.1% model (5360) for $89 (as opposed to $229 everywhere else) -- For most people here that is a much hotter deal. 5360 for $89 -- $229 list

It wouldn't surprise me that the Extech has evolved into an acceptable product. I admit to shunning them, as my original impression was that they were low-end when they first came out.
The same could also be said for Japanese autos and Viewsonic monitors. I remember when Viewsonic first came out. Our company was happy to buy a lot of them because they were dirt cheap compared to the competition. They were also pieces of crap. However the company was smart and plowed their profits into developing a product that is now considered to be pretty good.

If you just need a basic DMM buy the $5.99 pos at Harbor Frieght Tools, but if you actually "need" a meter, use one many times a month, depend on it etc., why would you get less than the best you can afford? Saving money on a tool you use to make money with isn't too smart.

Hey, I paid $20 for my 8060A (which retailed at $460 at the time) because it LOOKED old because it wasn't the new style and autoranging. But it has 4.5 digits and 0.04-0.05% precision. The guy that had it was closing up a small buisness that stuffed PC boards. My dad ended up getting a Fluke 83 for $50 (retailed about $100 iirc)

I tried to convince the people here at work to buy one, but even they wouldn't go for it.

Still no response on that one, and I think it is pretty clear. Atomsite, that is againt site rules, unless you want to pay for advertising (like the reputable companies pinned on the first page).
